Amazon Account Update Email

Hey! False Amazon account update email going around! (I know because I just got one. :p ) It says:
"Greetings from Amazon.com.

Dear customer,

Thank you for being our customer and we're happy to serve you.
If you have received this email this means that your account needs to be updated.
Please click on the link below and follow the steps to update your account."

Followed by a "Here to update" box with link.

THIS IS NOT FROM AMAZON. On Amazon's website they say this on how to tell if an email is actually from them:
"Provide instructions on how to verify account information through the Amazon.com website.
We'll never prompt you to verify account information through a link in the e-mail."

So yeah. Don't pay attention to that email. Spam it.
 
I got one of those this afternoon too. I figured it was a scam, because I'm not an Amazon customer. Haha.
 
lol I got one too except the primary account holder is my husband so I knew it was a scam when it was addressed to me. :)
 
I got one too and deleted right away. I never click email links.

ETA: I got a spam text the other day from a bank I don't even use saying I need to check my account. I just don't understand these hackers/scammers.
 
I got one few minutes ago and although I had doubts that it might be fake, I proceeded to update my address info (which stayed the same), but when the next screen came up to update my payment info, I closed the browser right away. I figured if I want to update the payment info, I will log on to the site myself and update it that way. I also changed my password right away as I realized that the email was fake. I should've just known that it was a spam.

There seems to be a rash of these scam things again... my dad called me yesterday that a guy from Windows called him to say that a program running on his computer is using too much bandwidth and this guy asked my dad to turn on the computer and he would walk him through how to fix it. Luckily, my dad hung up on him... the kicker is that my dad hasn't turned on the computer in like 3 months - he really doesn't know how to use it...

Oh I have had the "Microsoft" call me. They never say they are with Microsoft..it is just implied. I actually held a conversation with them about why they would think I am silly enough to give them information about my computer. They wanted to know specifics. Eventually, they got the idea and hung up but I was having fun. :)

I feel terrible for the elderly people who don't know enough about technology to be suspicious of calls like this. It makes me think of my Grandma, who would actually be happy to have some very helpful person from Microsoft call to help her figure out her computer. *sigh*:(
 
I got that email too.

One thing to do when receiving this kind of emails is to check the 'From' address. If it's not coming from the website's domain (e.g. amazon.com), then it's most likely spam. If the 'From' address contains the website's name, and has other words in it (e.g. amazoncustomerservice.com), then it's definitely fake.
 
Yeah I had to have a convo with my folks (in their 70s) about how Microsoft & Windows will never ever call you out of the blue to help you. No one from the internet will ever call you unless you ask them to first. They don't click on links in emails from companies but they have gotten halfway into phone conversations with people from "Facebook" before realizing it was a scam.

I got that Amazon email this morning & went out to Amazon on my own to check my data just to be sure but frankly I thought there were insufficient links for it to be actually from Amazon. Amazon always has half a dozen links in their legit emails. :)
 
I got the email last night, so thanks for the warning, Trish!

Over here there are a LOT of texting scams--people who say I've won XX amount of money and to call this number to verify my identity. And they always make it a point to say they are Attorney So-and-So...what, does being a lawyer make you sound more official?

I have friends who, when they get messages like these and they are bored, will actually hold text conversations with the person just to see how far they can take it.

Another scam is they pretend to be a relative from abroad who needs prepaid credit added to their phone, so could I please send it to them (via phone services)?
 
I made a purchase from Amazon and then got it. Crazy. I thought it was a little weird so I didnt open it. Thanks for letting us know.
 
I noticed it was fake too when it said it was sent via host *insert-name-of-another-digital-scrapstore* :D
So I figured they got hacked especially since, when I went to their forum to say something, it wouldn't even work and come up as data base error.
