Viewing PSD files on a PC

Anybody know how to make your PSD files show up as thumbnails on a PC? I really like that feature on a Mac, so I deleted all my jpgs of psd files, like templates, and I can't see my in progress layouts. It's so frustrating. I tried downloading Sage Thumbs, but it's not converting them consistently & it's jacking up my other files.

I use ACDSee or Adobe Bridge for looking at my PSDs. Not much help I suppose. :-)

Found this on SageThumbs concerning the problem you have, no idea if it help, but maybe worth a try:

When I first intalled it, I did have some issues where it displayed some of my psd files' thumbnails but not all of them, so I did a quick google search and came up with the solution, which is pretty simple; it just involves changing the settings in the SageThumbs program. Basically, all you have to do is check the box that says, "Prefer image file embedded thumbnails" and choose a higher "Maximum size of image file," for example 200MB. Here's the link to show you how to do it (the solution I suggested is taken from this link, but the link at least illustrates it, too):

Actually, that is helpful! I was just looking at ACDSee today, and I didn't know if anybody still uses it or not. For the purpose of tagging my stash, I just need ACDSee 16, right? Not the Pro or anything.

ACDSee 16 is all you need! And they have discounts so often, even at 70%, that it shouldn't even cost you much.

You could still check out that article on SageThumbs, it seems that you need to change on option so that it works properly. I might try it myself, even though I'm almost always using ACDSee as that's where the stuff is also tagged. :-)
 
What Darcy said. Why do you have .psd files anyway? Just convert them to .tiff and get rid of them. :)

I hear ya, Kim. Honestly, the reason I kept the psd & trashed the tiff is that I'm lazy. .Tiff files don't automatically open in PSE like psd files do. That's why.

And I have ten trillion of these files I can't see, so converting them all isn't an option really.

I did the think in the article you linked to, A, and now I can see them all, but my png files are still all jacked up. : (
 
I think you can set up PSE to run a batch process and resave all your layouts as Tiff overnight. ;) it'll clear up about 2/3 of the space your psd files are taking up anyway.
 
When I got my laptop with Win 7 I had to deal with this. I used Ardfry PSD Codec after the same method in Jacinda's link didn't work for me.

I resent that Adobe & Windows couldn't get their act together on this issue.

.tiff doesn't always work for all programs. I use PSP and it opens a .tiff as a flattened file. I have to use the .psd files. I just keep a .jpeg thumbnail of them to get around no being able to see with the .psd file is.

I always right click and open in PSE. Never dawned on me to do it any other way.

And yes, I know not all programs can open .tiff files, but I also know Kellie's using PSE. And I felt like giving her a hard time. :hugs: ya Kellie. And honestly, I'd still devote a half hour or hour a day to converting them. You're going to save so much space once they're all converted and you can see them without messing with special programs.
 
.tiff don't open in layers in my Gimp, so I never used them. But: my .psd show up on Picasa, that's the main reason why I use it.

Couldn't you just make PSE the default program for opening tiff files? Or are you talking about something else?
 
Just in case, if you get ACDSee, you can use Tools > External Editors to add PSE and then open your PSDs, PNGs and the rest in PSE through CTRL+ALT+X.

It's taken me ages to realise this and you don't want to know how silly I felt when I found out after using a very ineffective way of opening my files for years. :-)

^^That^^ might require a little too much effort for me. I'd have to figure out how to do that, and I'd probably never get past the google results page, but...

^^that^^ turned out to be way easier than I figured. I just right clicked and it gave me the option of setting the default, so yay!
