Where is the BEST place to live..

I'm clearly daydreaming.. but I want to run far far away and just get out of this place. I've been dreaming about moving for a long time now. So sell me on where you live :p What are the BEST states to live in (all things combined, cost of living, location, etc). I live in the north east.. and while I LOVE it (I have this deep need to be near the coast, but I could be convinced otherwise :P )It's really expensive here and I have a zillion other real reasons for wanting to leave this state. We could reasonably move anywhere at this point as long as BF could find a job - and he's a pilot so he could feasibly find a job in most places. He's considering going into the airlines anyway (not his ideal, but it;d be more money.. it would just suck a lot for him the first few years as he'd have no seniority). Heck he even has talked about moving us to like Africa for a year to take a contract job :p So really.. There's not much limitation in my dreaming here :p
 
I gotta say, moving to Charlotte was the best decision EVER! I absolutely love it here La. The weather is better (more interesting) that any of the places Ive lived and thats saying something since I am from Southern California which is supposedly the best weather in the country. The people are wonderful (far enough south that you get a bit of that southern hospitality but far enough north that you get a lot of modern thinking/personalities too). It's absolutely gorgeous here (like still smile every time I get in my car to go for a drive anywhere and it's been a year gorgeous). The schools are fantastic! I dunno, I cant say enough good things about this area.
 
well, you probably would NOT coming, but I have to say: Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. :wub: (google it - the best place in Brazil. seriously!)

Dream big, sweetie. DREAM! You deserve to dream. :)
 
I'd so go to Africa for a year! What an adventure! I don't have one place I can fight for personally. I love everywhere. Every place has good and bad to me. :)
 
one of my cousins actually lives in NC (Well, they're living in taiwan atm so i guess technically they don't live there anymore :p ).. It's def on my maybe list. We had talked about looking at the Virgina through NC area.. but I've only been to NC in passing. Is the cost of living reasonable in NC?

We all kinds of coasts here in Florida that you would like. No state income tax either. It's warm pretty much all year, our winters are super short or non-existent. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
 
I think the cost of living is pretty reasonable here. We live in South Charlotte which has some of the top rated schools in the area and homes around us go anywhere from 400-600k which is remarkably better than the best neighborhoods in Phoenix (nice houses, best schools) which would have been upwards of a million to buy. There are ALL kinds of neighborhoods and areas here and we're in the heart of one of the more upscale areas in the greater Charlotte area, partially because Rocky didnt want to be too far from work in Uptown Charlotte when we moved. If you dont mind being an extra 10 mins out of the heart of Charlotte, there are wonderful schools and neighborhoods in the $200k area. I think there is something for everyone here and its really true that they say no one in Charlotte is from Charlotte, everyone is a transplant it seems, so we have a pretty diverse population which we are really loving.

I would really like to live somewhere like that -.- In the town i'm in now.. everyone was born, grew up here, and is now raising their kids with their childhood friends here.. It breeds a very cliquey unhappy place for La to live. Barf. lol
 
nicole & stacy.. I like snow :p haha. He lived in FL for three years, I've only been once or twice (? foggy memory apparently) and the humidity nearly killed me! :[
 
I just plugged Charlotte into craigslist to see what types of houses they had for rent to get a better feel on sizes/costs/etc in comparison to here since I'm renting atm .. and there's 1) a lot of cute little houses (not just apartments) and it all seems reasonable/cheaper than here. Granted I have no idea where any of these towns are :p

I really want to go to Scotland one day.. I've been to ireland, and it's gorgeous. I have family from both places. I'm jealous of my great-grandparents getting to grow up in such gorgeous locations :p (ok, ireland was a pretty unhappy place when my great grandmother was there :p lol)
 
Well... if you like snow, may I sell you on Wisconsin... hahah :D

Appleton is a great place to live... it's a smallish city - 63000 people, however, with the metro we are pushed closer to million. We have culture and museums... a 1-2 hr drive to Madison/Milwaukee... 3-4 hours to Chicago/Minneapolis... If you are okay with football - it is Packer country. If you love the outdoors, you aren't far from the great north woods or to Door County which I think has the feel of cape codish.. ;) we don't have ocean coasts.. but we do have Lake Michigan... :)

If BF is looking commercial, we have a regional airport with United and Delta. My step-dad's nephew is a pilot and is based out of Chicago, but lives up here. Or, if he wants to move into industry... Gulf stream has operations here.

Even though we homeschool :o, we do have great schools... my hubby's boss just moved from the east coast and he took the job here because his "big city" wife loved the feel of the area and they really liked the rep of our schools.

My mom's family is from Scotland, but they would be like way distant relatives. lol John has an aunt from there, so I guess they would be sorta relatives. lol Every time I mention something bugging me about where I am my friend comes back with how Scotland is so much better.
 
OH wow, I'm only a few hours north of Charlotte. Cary, NC is another nice place or so I've heard.
I live in a SMALL town. It's quiet, historic, no crime to speak of, 2 hours from the mountains, 4 hours from the beach. But the unemployment rate is high and there's not much to do.

yeh starting in the airlines............ will suck big big big time. you don't get to pick your base esp being a lowly peon newb .. We live right outside of boston-- but the likelyhood of him being based there is like -539325%. our friend (that lives here) is also based out of chicago. It's bleck!

I know nothing about Wisconsin. Except cheese. HAHA.

we have no mountains here.. Living near mountains would be really amazing.
 
I would like to live somewhere where neighbours have common courtesy and respect for each other and don't let their loud obnoxious hound dogs bark all the time and also don't blast their music at all hours of the night. Grrrrrrrrrr

I would immediately go to Australia... Northern Part. In general, I would like to live anywhere it's HOT (80 to 90 F is my favorite temperature, more is fine, lower not so much...) and people speak English (I'm German, but I WANT TO SPEAK ENGLISH). We live in Northern Germany, and it's JUST TOO FREAKING COLD here. Even in summer.
 
We have snow in Utah and a decent sized airport. :) You know I love my Utah mountains. But, I think there's a bit of a culture shock here . . . heck, even I feel like I'm surrounded by a bunch of aliens half the time. I love it here, though. And, I'd love it even more if Lala lived here. :)
 
I think Charlotte is beautiful. I would love for you to live somewhere northwest because I am greedy but NC could work if we could visit one day lol
 
We moved from Chicagoland area to Northern Virginia and I have no regrets. We live about 30 miles northwest of DC so we are close enough to metropolitan areas and very close to farms, wineries and lots of greenery. Schools are awesome around here and the neighborhood we live, there are people who moved from various states here. I have no desire to go back to Illinois.
 
I am also dreaming of moving. Oregon is just sucking the happy out of me. It's expensive, the crime is bad, and rain, rain, rain. Right now, in summer, it's the best place in the world to be. But come October-June, I'll hate every grey and rainy day. We've talked several times of moving and one of the places that I keep thinking of is Colorado. They get a lot of sunshine and have the snow too.
 
He can get any airline job in Atlanta..however I'd pick a Carolina before I'd move here...North or South Carolina is on my short list of states I'd move to if I was to move.
 
Kristin, there's lots of houses for sale here. We have an ordinance that dogs can't bark more than 20 minutes without getting a fine.
 
I think most people would think no way when they hear about North Dakota, just cause they judge it without knowing it, but I love it. I live in Fargo. Its about 250,000 in the metro area which is nice. We are growing at outstanding rates right now. We never had the recession, unemployment is very low, our airport is growing big time, too. They have added many new airlines and routes lately. The school systems are ranked really high in the nation. Housing is cheap, too. Seriously, I bought my own house and I am a single mom. Its still very affordable to live here. People are friendly. Fargo likes to feel like its a big town, so it works hard bring in new business, etc. We are also only 3 hours from Minneapolis. It isn't the prettiest when you first move here because it is amazingly flat, but after a while you start to really appreciate it. It's very safe here, too, we have low crime rates. We are also consistently placed in the different magazines who do lists as one of the best places in the nation to live. Our weather is very varied though. It's often into the 90s (with a handful of 100 degree days) in the summer and very cold/snowy in the winter. The lake country of Minnesota is only a half hour away and the Northwoods are very close. I love it here. :)
 
Did you say Africa? Cape Town is a big hub for flights etc. and it is picturesque...little bit of paradise. We have 9 months of sunshine, no humidity. Snowfall up in the mountains, best seafood in the world, most amazing sunsets and yes its just heavenly. I miss home so much. Cost of living...if you compare the fact that currently its about R10 to the $ you can get more bang for your buck.
