Let's talk... bath towels.

It's time for me to replace all of our bath towels. It's been 10 years since we got married, and the ones I registered for held up nicely, but they are ready to be replaced. The kids are finally past the hooded bath towel phase and I'm redoing their bathroom, so they need new towels too.

The first thing I'm wondering is: how many bath towels should I buy? I feel like I currently have too many. When they are all clean at the same time I can't fit them all in the linen closets. I was thinking of buying 3 bath towels per person in our household. do you think thats enough? Plus, we have started using our bath towels a couple times before washing them... So it's not like we are constantly needing clean ones.

So, where do you buy your towels? I bought some Thomas O'Brien washcloths from Target and I like how thick and soft they are. But the reviews for the bath towels are throwing me off... Everywhere I look I can't seem to find a single towel with good reviews. :cursing:

I went through a new bath towel phase this past spring :) I bought 2 new towels for each of us (so a total of 4), but I do laundry every other day and we also use a bath towel twice before washing, so 2 per person is plenty. I also saved 2 of the old towels per person to use as hair towels because I just absolutely cannot begin to dry my body off until my hair is wrapped up in a towel first :D

I went to BBB (bed bath and beyond) and got a good deal - I'm cheap though and won't spend a lot on towels :p

ETA: We also have separate beach towels that sometimes get used for showers and I have a separate batch of older towels for kids that are here on any given day in the summer getting wet.
 
Marie... I was looking at BBB as well. I have a 20% off coupon for them that's burning a hole in my pocket. Lol!

I am all about affordable towels. But, i wash them on a heavy duty/hot water cycle. So I'm not exactly gentle with them. I can't have then shrinking weird on me or unraveling. :p
 
I use Threshold towels from target. We have one bath sheet per adult, plus 2 regular towels per person. I've been using mine for a long time and I wash similar to you and they've held up great.
 
I have generally bought from Walmart or Target (I wouldn't recommend Walmart, they got dingy fast). I don't necessarily buy by person but per bathroom. We have two kids and two bathrooms. I generally buy 4 towels per room, two hand towels, and 4 wash clothes. That usually works for us.
 
I like our Thomas OBrian ones, but we got them 6 years ago, and I know things change. We also bought some at Sam's Club that I love equally if not more. They are as soft, but not quite as thick so they dry faster. I wash towels when they stop smelling fresh, so depending on the time of year it's every week or two. I dry my hair with tshirts, not towels, and those I usually use 2-3 times before they need washing. Also, unless it's a particularly sticky/stinky day, I don't shower every day. I'm not gross, and my hair and skin are much healthier since I made the switch. So 2 sets of towels per person are perfect for us, and one set for guests with some old towels for backup and older towels for rags.
 
2 bath towels per person, 7 washcloths per person and 7 hand towels. We reuse our bath towel for half the week, but change out the hand towels every day and use a new wash cloth every shower/bath. We have 2 extra sets put aside for company. I use some homemade turbi-towels on my hair (when it was long).

I stick with primary colors, no patterns. I just get the Target towels. I actually prefer towels that aren't thick and soft. Besides drying faster, I like the not-so-thick towels because I like the buffing power on my skin.
 
Hmm... I'm not sure how many... we have six towels in the master and kiddo has an assorted ones from wedding gifts and from hubby's first place. I want new towels, too... but mine have held up way too well that i can't justify getting new ones. :thumbdown: haha... I always buy all my towels from Kohls (same as my mom has for many, many years)... I'm STILL using the towels that I got for when I went off to college - those are the ones I used for going to the Y... they are pink and don't go with my current bath colors.
 
I have a crazy amount of towels but I like it that way. We don't reuse. I tried. I didn't like it. LOL So we use a new one each day (well the hubby and I). Kids use a new towel they bath but they don't bath every day. SO, I think you numbers sound like they would work for you. I have been really happy with the JCPenny brand. They do sales where you buy one get one for $1 a few times a year. Love them and they are thick and last a long time.

I keep all old towels in garage for when we wash the dog, car or have some mess I don't want to ruin my good ones with. :)
 
i have two towels per person - plus some extra bath sheets (larger towels) that i like to use. i have a few more face/hand towels. all our towels are white - because i like the way they hold up and i can bleach them, etc.

i buy all our linens from thecompanystore.com - i like them a lot, and i get compliments from guests, too :)

Hey, Dana... just out of curiosity, which ones from the Company Store? I'm looking at the Company Cotton ones now...
 
hmmm. i just have a bunch of random towels. i usually buy them two at a time whenever i need to replace some. although that isn't very often, as they all tend to hold up really well despite my abusive washing system for them [hot, hot, hot]. i've bought towels at Target, JCPenney, Sams & Costco and have only found the ones from Target to be hit or miss [the last one i bought there were very easily snagged and shed threads horribly in the dryer. i ended up having to throw them out]. and i must be totally weird. because i've absolutely no idea how many there would be per person. all i know is the linen closet is fully stocked... lol.
 
2-3 per person, plus I like to have a guest set for when we entertain. I like Target for towels because then you can replace cheaply if needed and have a little extra for cute color-coordinated towels for holidays (but then I might just be crazy!) My towels hold up pretty well but I use cold water unless someone has been ill.
 
We have 2 per person (so six towels total). I usually reuse once or twice before laundering and if we have guests then I just wash everyday. Not a big deal. We have the ÅFJÄRDEN towels from Ikea and really like them so far (had them for about a year now I think).
 
We have about 90 gabillion towels & facecloths..seriously , I wouldn't even want to count them right now.

Target towels- I've had them for about 6 years, the ones i have are on the thinner side, and i don't love them but they appear to be lasting forever.

Walmart towels- I hate 90% of walmart towels, they suck and fall apart HOWEVER. their better homes & garden towels-- I only have 2 of them, and they are my favourite towel in the world :p so thick and fluffy and I'm so excited when I get to use the towel and no one else snagged it :p (ok, I'm a wee excited about these towels sorry.)

I also have some of these soft touch towels.. that we were given. I have no idea where they were bought.. but never buy them. My washing machine shredded them into 900 pieces. That was fun.
 
Dang, you all are waaaaay more organized than I am. I have no idea how many towels I have yet alone how many per person! LOL :blink: We use them for a few days before putting in the towel hamper, but we have so many, I only wash towels about once a month unless the boys put them in with their clothes, then they are washed weekly. We do have "special" towels that I save for guests because even though we only have guests a couple of times a year, I still want nice towels for them. :) Of those, I think I have 8 sets.

My favorite kind of towel (since we reuse) is the ones that are 2 colors - like we have black on one side, gray on the other. I only use the black side for drying my face, and the gray side for the body. :)

I use a hair wrap for my hair - absorbs better and much lighter than a towel. I even take those along on trips/vacation. :thumbup:
 
My kids seem to go through a ton of towels even though I keep telling them to reuse them. We started buying Disney beach towels for the kids when they were really little and we have quite a collection of them. I am actually really impressed at how they have held up -- they have lasted forever! I keep thinking we should replace them now that the kids are too grown up for Disney towels but it's hard to justify since they are in such good shape!

We replaced all our towels with those a while back and I love them to death. lol They have held up sooooo well too.
We have 2 towels per person, but honestly I'm pretty sure Bella, Ryan, and Zach all end up using the same towel because I only ever see three hanging in the bathroom at a time. lol Zach takes the one he got out the last time to the laundry room and gets a new one and I'm 99% sure that Ryan and Bella are just lazy and use his. lol
 
I just bought new towels at Target, but I have no idea what body/face product I use that wrecks my towels, but apparently they do. I thought with the last set of towels I got it was just a bad batch (from Herbergers and nice), but it happened with these too. Its like bleach in patches around the towel. I don't think its my acne stuff because I don't use that in the shower so it shouldn't be on the bath towels and I actually don't use the hand towel with it either, I grab an old one and use that afterwards, but it still happened.

That's weird that even though you try to avoid getting the acne cream on the towels, they still get bleached. Our towels have gotten ruined because of that stuff from my boys. Years ago my husband was using something for his face and we didn't know that was what was causing the bleach spots on towels and clothes. He thought I was doing it in the wash! I finally took one of his alreadyuined shirts and wrote out a word on it with my finger that had touched the acne cream. He never complained again. Ha!

i am pretty sure those are the ones i have, brooke! i bought mine 6 years ago so i cannot remember exactly, but i think it was those :) :thumbup:

Did you know that coupons at BB&B do not expire!! Plus you can use up to 3 coupons at a time when making purchases. The on-line coupons do expire, so you would want to use them sooner. I usually hand a bunch to the clerk and say, " which can I use?" So SAVE all of those expired BB&B coupons, they add up. :) I keep an envelope in my purse just for those. Some have an expiration date of a year ago and I've used them in TX, CA and KY.

Great tip, Sandy!!! My mom told me this last year... after I threw out 5 of them that were expired! :glare: I know to keep them in my car glove box so I have them on hand. I think I am going there for towels today. :) The Company Store ones look really nice but I need instant gratification. :p
 
Good thread. We also have all the towels from our wedding that finally need to be replaced; we just celebrated our 15th anniversary! We mostly use bath-sized towels here. We use the same towel for face, hands, and the shower for a few days before washing, and only the kids use washcloths. DH and I each have 3 bath towels, but we don't like the 3rd so we alternate 2 most of the time. The kids have a bunch of towels, and we use them for both the pool and the shower. It probably works out to 4 per kid, but I don't know for sure.
 
Well, heck... I need to start saving all my BBB coupons then! I just threw out a few expired ones. :(

I couldn't tell you how many per person we have or how many total. Too many when they are all clean and not enough when my kids get hold of them. The kids seem to go through a new towel every time they bathe or shower. DH will use his for several times before he gets a new one - IF he remembers to put it away instead of draping it over a chair somewhere. Sometimes I reuse, other times I get a fresh one. I have dry skin and often shed some skin while drying off so I usually prefer a fresh towel each time 'cause the thought of drying my face on dead skin cells creeps me out.

We have a couple of the Better Homes and Gardens towels from Walmart. They have held up nicely. I paid a small fortune for a body sheet from BBB for Sean and it snagged, shedded and unraveled and I finally got rid of it. He has a towel that his sister gave him as a graduation present 20 years ago that is still holding up nicely. We have a cheap set from somewhere (LTD I think) that isn't too soft or too thick but still holding up nicely. I hate that we have so many mismatched towels but we don't keep them IN the bathrooms so they don't need to match anything. Neither of our bathrooms has any storage space for them so we put them in a closet in the hallway and just grab as needed. We don't really use wash cloths. We use poofs with shower gel to wash with and facial cleansing clothes for washing faces so the wash cloths rarely get touched. Each person has a beach towel and there is one extra as it was bought for my step-son years ago. The beach towels DH and I use are 18 years old and should probably be replaced at some point but they are still nice and absorbent.
