A cousin that I haven't really seen since he was really little passed away over the weekend and my Mom asked if I could make something to take to the gathering after the funeral. I want to take something that would be easy to make because I'll probably be making it in the morning. I was thinking a casserole dish of some sort? Most likely it would sit in my car during the funeral because it's clear across town and I can't go back and forth. I'm hoping the gathering is at the church hall because then it wouldn't have to sit in my car.

Anywhoo....any suggestions?

ETA: If you know of a recipe, hook me up. :)
 
I really haven't been to many funerals. The couple I did go to just had fingerfood. Little sandwiches, small savouries, cakes, biscuits, vege/fruit/dip platters etc.
 
At my grandma's funeral last fall, we held it in the church hall. The ladie's auxiliary at the church organized it, so they had a bit of a theme. There was fried chicken and then a bazillion different side dishes to go with it. There were also loads of desserts (mostly pies and cobblers and that sort of thing).

I'd say if you don't know of a specific theme for the meal that a casserole would be just fine! Or maybe something you can do in the crockpot the night before that you could just take the whole crock pot with you?

I am wanting something that I can take in a disposable container. Chances are, if I take my crockpot I will never get it back. That's why I was thinking a casserole.

Another issue that I am having is not knowing how many people they are expecting to attend. I wish my Mom had more info for me.
 
I've been to many funerals and they were all different... DH's grandfather and my step dad's uncle's were both catered, so a dish to pass wasn't expected and if you wanted to bring something, you brought an assorted bar or cookie for desert.

When I have funeral duty for my church, I usually just make some kind of side salad... pasta salad or a jello salad. Oh - Jello salads are HUGE around here for funerals... not sure if it is a Midwest/Wisconsin or a Lutheran Church thing... 99% of the funerals I've been to have ham sandwiches, potato salad, jello salads, and assorted bars... or it could be my family being cheap, I mean frugal... :)

I get a bunch of slider sized potato rolls and make 2-3 dozen little ham & cheese sandwiches. Or a mix of ham & cheese and turkey & cheese. Wrap them in foil/plastic by the half dozen and put them in a cooler with a frozen gel pack. Get a big plastic serving plate from Wal Mart (currently on sale for $2 here) that you don't need back and stack them on it for serving. They are quick to assemble & can be made the night before & wrapped up & kept in the fridge.

They seem to go over well as a nice addition to casseroles and hot food that most people bring.

If not the sandwiches, I make a couple pans of brownies, cut them into squares & bring them on the big plastic tray.

Around here, there's a thing called Funeral Potatoes. It's a creamy au gratin potato casserole, and it got its name from all the Mormons around here serving it at funeral luncheons. :) It hasn't been a tradition at our family funerals, but the name sticks. :D

Oh my word!!!! This is exactly what I was going to say except substitute Mormons to Missionary Church ladies! LOL

Lol. I never know if things like that are really unique to us Mormons or if we just get the rap for it here cause we're such a large majority of the population. I'm glad to hear that other congregations love their Funeral Potatoes. :) Jello salad, anyone?
 
We fix funeral potatoes at home all the time. I have crackel barrels recipe for potato casserole! Disposable pans! Or make a fruit salad. I have a recipe that feeds a bunch. Its like a glaze that has apples bananas grapes strawberries.
