What would you do?

So I like to take pictures. I once took a picture of the valley where I live to print out and give to friends who move away (in a printed form and framed) for them to have something that reminds them of our little desert. Anyway, I have a friend who just asked me if I could email her the original file so that she can gift it to someone. I have mixed feelings about it and don't know what to say to her. I was wondering what you would do if you were in my shoes. Any help would be appreciated. :blink:

Hmmm...I'm not sure I would give up the original file. Could you send her a jpeg saved at whatever size she wants to give it as?

Thank you! I responded by offering to print it out. Have yet to hear back from her.

I don't get the problem. If I took a picture that someone else wanted to use as a gift, I'd be through the roof. How come you don't want to send her the file? {I'm not saying you SHOULD, I just don't understand why you don't want to.}

I can't say I completely understand, either. Like you, I personally would just email the photo and be thrilled someone loved it enough to want to gift it also.

But because Yari said she had mixed feelings my advice was to give it to her in a printed form. Maybe from a photographer's perspective (as a business) Yari is thinking this "friend" would re-distribute her photograph??? Or maybe she's wanting to sell it? Am I right, Yari?

I can see how the situation would make me feel conflicted. I would be thrilled that someone felt my photo was good enough to gift to another, but I would also be hesitant. So many people think so little of copyright laws and I could just see one of my friends giving such a gift away and failing to mention who the photographer was and taking credit for it themselves. I feel like I would want my work recognized as mine, you know? Lots of times I've had people ask for photos, I send them, they share them with others and everyone talks about what great pictures they are but no one mentions that the person sharing them didn't take them. It just kind of grates on me... so I can see how the situation would cause questions.

Is the gift going to be for a mutual friend? If so I would feel strange about it too, since it was your original idea to take/print/frame the photo and it would be poor etiquette for someone to repurpose your idea as theirs ... although I'm sure it's flattering that they like your great idea!

My issue with sending the original file is she is likely to change that and print it out badly and still say it's Yari's photo or she could post it all over the internet without saying anything about it being Yari's original photo. I understand the mixed feelings.

I think I would most likely just give her the photo in the size she asked for. But I guess I could understand being hesitant.

I understand the conflicting feelings too. Personally, I'm a person who is not too worried about giving out the original files - I feel happy when people want to have my photos. I'm not a business owner though. When I've done paid shoots for people, I charge for my time, work, and editing, but I do give out my files to use as they please. I'd definitely agree that offering a jpeg in the size she needs or printing it would be a great idea and I'm sure she'll be fine with that (unless she had other motives for having the file!)
