Smartphone space?

I'm about to take the plunge and get my first ever smartphone... big deal for me!

So, how much space do I need on it? 16, 32 GB, etc? Will I regret a smaller phone later?

I'd say it depends what kind of phone you're getting. My Samsung Galaxy SIII has a micro-SD card slot, so I didn't worry too much about memory on the phone. I've already filled up the 16GB of memory on my phone, and I've only had it for four months, I think. Of course, I could always move some of the photos off of the phone since I've imported them to the computer. I like not having to, though :)

Are you going to put music and/or videos for you or kiddos to watch? Then probably want the larger size...

I use dropbox for my photos... LOVE it!! So I take those off right away... :)

Eeep! I didn't even think about the fact that I could put videos on it! Now I have to ponder if that's something I'll do... The kids would probably like that, I think.

So many decisions to make!!

I have a 8gb one that suits me. I just have music & audiobooks on it, plus some photos. I use Dropbox so they get transferred off without my involvement & then I prune them down to 1-2 per event.

The boys don't like to watch videos on the phone, they think the screen is too small.

Congrats! They're so much fun. Can you expand the storage with an SD card? If so, it's less important how much storage you have since everything you're considering is decent sized. If there's no ability to expand the storage, go for bigger.

My phone's storage capacity is absolutely tiny, about 160 MB. I have a 16 GB SD card in it, and before buying the phone I thought I'd be able to just put everything on the SD card. Unfortunately, not everything can be moved; many of the apps that came pre-installed are things I won't use, but I can't uninstall them or move them to the SD card. They take up more than half of my memory! When you download an app, generally a portion of it has to remain on the phone's HD even after you move the bulk of it to the SD card. So I can keep all my photos, videos, audiobooks, etc. on the SD card, and the HD is devoted to apps.

ETA: My kids don't mind the small screen for videos, but Netflix works very slowly on my phone so we don't use it much.

It really depends. These days a lot can be stored in the cloud. Apple iTunes and the App store will remember what you have purchased/downloaded from them. So if you buy movies from Apple, you don't have to keep them all on your phone all the time. Same with Amazon and the Kindle books app. Or music you have purchased from Amazon. And of course you can use Dropbox to transfer your photos. So, you might do fine with a 16gb. Of course 32 or more gb will give you more space and you won't have to move things around. It really depends on what you think you will use it for,

You can't use an SD card with an iPhone but you can with Droids. You don't say what phone you have decided to get.

I love my iPhone, but my next one will definitely be bigger in the storage area. I have the 16gbs as I have a nano for my music. But I still fill it up often with pics, apps, audiobooks, music, etc. I empty it monthly. I'm thinking I'll go with a 32 next time around. So consider what all you want on it is what I would say. Do you plan to take photos with it often? Do you plan to play games? listen to music?

I'm leaning towards the 32 GB iPhone - which is not expandable so I have to pick a size... For a total smartphone newbie there is so much to consider -- and don't get me started on the different carrier plans!

I plan on listening to music, some photos (will work with DropBox to manage space), but I'm not sure about videos yet... it might be nice to have a couple of videos, but on the other hand we have tablets that I could put videos on for the kids and I've never done that before either... It sounds like the 32GB one will be enough that I can have a good number of apps and games for the kids.

I have 16GB iPhone and it works for me. For music, there are so many apps for streaming music, that you can get away without loading much on your phone. Photos, you can download to your computer on regular basis. Since you have tablet, you may not need the space for videos. The only thing I was filling up my memory with was the videos I was taking of kids. My phone was filled up until I realized that all my videos were taking up the space. Now, I move them on my computer after a month or two.
