Intermittent Fasting

I am going to give intermittent fasting a try. Have any of you done this? Was it successful? Did you count calories or watch what you ate for those meals? What time frame did you eat/fast? I appreciate any insight or direction. :)

Yes. I have been intermittent fasting of and on for a couple of years now. I eat between 11:30am and 7:30pm. I don't count my calories, however, I do carefully watch what I eat. I am just the type of person that will gain weight by looking at food. I have Hashimoto's so I constantly struggle with my body.

I started again faithfully around November. I've lost about 21lbs.

That is wonderful, Carrie! I am going to give this a go. I also tend to gain weight by "Looking at food"! My husband, Tod, has such amazing willpower and has lost weight even though I didn't think he needed to. He is tall and slender. I am short and "Fluffy"! 🤣

No intermittent fasting for me... I would still eat sweet stuff, plus I like a snack in the evening.
This year I started 'Project Health', which is a Dutch method. You start with finding out how many calories per day you need and deduct that with 500 (it's based on gender, age, height, weight and how many hours you sport per week). Since the start I lost almost 8 kg (equals 17,6 lbs, I think), still 15 kg (33 lbs) to go.
My first goal was to have lost those 8 kg by now (before my 50th birthday on april 13), the next goal is those extra 15 kg by this time next year (before our 25th wedding anniversary on april 12, 2027).
For this Project Health works, because you just eat normal, there is room for some extras through the week, to eat out if you wish, etc. It's based on 3 meals and 3 snacking moments. You get day to day meal plans as well, so no need for thinking.
I must admit, after a few weeks I found out what worked for me and how to change things that I don't like (like meals with pasta for example, no macaroni or spaghetti for me... yuk. I know, most people think I'm crazy when I say this). I also found that I skip the morning and afternoon snack, but add them to either breakfast, lunch or evening snack.
Anyway, we have had some lovely meals through this plan, we all liked them (and yes, also a few things that just didn't turned out tasty...). I think it's an easy way to fit in your day to day life. The only thing is that you have to prepare all your meals and that takes time... So I'm spending more time in the kitchen then before, lol.

Good luck on finding a plan that suits you and helps you loose those lbs! And to keep them away as well.

Intermittent fasting has been life changing for me. When I first started in 2021, I lost 12 lbs in four months. My eating window was 12 pm-6 pm, and it didn't take long before I stopped being hungry in the mornings. At that time, I started *trying* to limit my sugar intake to 25 grams/day, which was much harder than limiting my eating window, so I'm sure that contributed to my quick weight loss, as well.
Five years later, I've stayed at the same weight, and my eating window is usually from 9 am - 6 pm. Once a month or so, I try to get in an extended fast of 24-36 hours, but I'm not very consistent with that.

I have been on intermittent fasting for so many years that I don't remember when I started it, but I am sure it was several years before I had Michelle. I do 12pm-8pm eating window, though I make it a mission to have dinner at 6pm and stop eating after dinner. At the beginning, I eliminated rice from my weekday meals, because that's where Asians consume carbs the most. Now, I eat mostly salad and boiled egg/smoked salmon for lunch and a bit of rice with the dishes I cook for dinner. I also drink up to 3L of water daily (on top of whatever other drink I have).
I am not one to count the calories of what I eat. It's too complicated and stressful for me. My principal is that I eat what I want moderately, nothing excessive. It's something that I taught Lan and our kids, you can snack, you can eat, you can enjoy food/drink that you love, but always moderately. Too much or too little of things always lead to unhealthiness or obsession.
When I feel like eating a cake, I'd eat them together with everyone. That way, everyone has a taste and I won't be having a whole piece of cake on my own. It's a trick so that even the kids are not overeating sweets.

I've done 36 hours fasting last month for the first time and it really did wonder. It cleared up my brain fog, got rid of my constant bloating and it was easier than I thought. I was not struggling with hunger at all, except for the last 1 hour, which was kind of funny. Lan and Michael were not happy about me fasting that long though, they feel so weird having dinner without me.

I've been an IF'er since 2019, although I didn't fully commit until 2023. I absolutely love it! I typically eat within about a 5 hour window... sometimes as little as 3 hours, but rarely more than 8. Over time I have definitely changed my eating habits, although I still enjoy ice cream and chocolate in addition to healthier choices lol. I find it super easy most days because I am a clean faster - only black coffee and water until I open my window. That is key to really finding success, IMO.
If you are interested in learning more, I highly recommend Gin Stephens - she has multiple books and a couple of podcasts that are excellent. https://www.fastfeastrepeat.com/

Thank you so much, Lori!

I am trying to eat between 11-6. 2 meals and trying not to snack but if I feel really hungry I’ll eat some protein. We eat out a lot socially so am trying to curtail mindless eating at home and increase water. I want to make lemon water to sip on in the afternoon. My fasting is called dirty fasting because my morning coffee has milk and stevia.

I can't do IF with my medical issues but a dear friend + her husband have been doing it for the last couple years. They eat between 1 - 7 pm. They do not count calories but they eat pretty healthy to begin with: lots of veg & fruit with minimal white meat. My friend said she drinks Joyburst which is flavored water with electrolytes that helps her make it through the morning without eating.

I will have to look up those drinks. :)

Honestly if you're drinking flavored things, it's not actually fasting.... once your body adjusts to clean fasting, it's not hard to make it through the day at all. There are so many health benefits to fasting beyond just weight loss, and if you have to white knuckle it, it's not working like it should. I could go on, but I'll just stop now... lol.

I am nterested in IF and have done it in the past but now I am old and have some medical issues where I need to take medication with food in the mornings...how do you deal with that on IF?

You can eat for 6-8 hours starting from breakfast and just skip dinner. For me, it's easier to fast a little in the morning and a little in the evening, but there are plenty of people who quit eating after lunch. It's hard at first, but once you get into the habit of it, you probably won't even feel that hungry after lunch. Sometimes, I eat a big lunch at one and skip dinner, and sometimes I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner with only a 12 hour fasting period.
