Winter Storm?

I saw on the news about the winter storm that is supposed to hit the USA this weekend.. it looks crazy especially for a lot of you who don't get this type of weather

I am in the mountains in canada so it's pretty common here however I am not someone who takes weather concerns lightly especially when you don't have the resources to deal with it. We have magical fairies who come and clean our roads before we have to really worry and we have the proper clothings and tires for our vehicles... anyways hopefully everyone stays safe and no power is lost

Our winter here has been pretty mild and other than a few dumps of snow it doesn't seem normal for winter at all. I've been going for my walks quite often in just a hoodie and not even a coat (although that could be my age and feeling hot all the time :P )
 
Yeah, everyone’s freaking out in our part of North Carolina. My husband manages a grocery store and he says it’s been madness all day... promise it won’t get better as the weekend approaches!!

It’s not so much the threat of snow- people here actually enjoy the snow when it comes. It’s more the ice storms that become a massive issue. We just don’t have the infrastructure or action plans for these winter weather events. And so many people have “PTSD” from storms in the past that were debilitating. New transplants just don’t get it. I’m hoping the forecast eases up a bit as we get closer.

Hurricanes we can handle… ice storms, not so much.
 
Right now it is a wait and see situation as to whether I will have snow or just very cold temperatures. The models tracking of the storm have been all over the place. As of now the temps are supposed to be a high of 9F on Sat and 15F on Sun. I'm in west central Ohio, about halfway between Toledo and Cincinnati.

Just in the last 3 days, the prediction has been for 1) over 6" Sat/Sun (Mon prediction), 2) no snow at all Sat/Sun (Tuesday prediction), 3)1" Sat/3" Sun (earlier today) and 4) 2" Sat/4" Sun (8:20 pm EST)

After I got my car serviced today, I went to Wal-Mart. The place was busy especially in the grocery area. I picked up a few things to get me thru the weekend (whether it is snow or cold temps) so I will be hibernating and if it snows, I'll take pics out my windows. Don't know if my neighbor will try to clear my driveway on Sunday since they are predicting it will snow all day long. If he doesn't do it on Sunday, he'll do it on Monday. He knows I don't go anywhere when there is snow on the ground.

Where are you in North Carolina? My dad moved to Rocky Mount in 2000 and lived there til he passed away in 2016. He never had a problem with the snow coming from Ohio but he did talk about how the "locals" didn't know how to drive in it. Although he finally convinced his lady friend to to Florida from December until March. She only wanted to go for 1 month. That wasn't long enough for him! He and my mom did the same thing (4 months) to get out of Ohio's winter weather before she died in 1996 in Florida.
 
We’re outside of Raleigh. I moved here in 2007, so while I’m not a native, I’m well-versed in native culture LOL.

100% agree about the drivers. It’s not just snow though, any kind of weather and people are like deer in headlights. I’m from NY and the drivers there are crazy, but can hold their own. The funny part is that there are sooooo many northwesterners like me in this area (lots of Ohioans too!)… so make it make sense?!?!

I love the weather here most of the time, but some winters are worse than others and this is a bad one so far.
 
I've heard meteorologists come to NE Ohio to train because our weather is so weird. Last week I shoveled three times in 24 hours then it was back to nothing because of the extreme cold. It's always interesting here.


And, that's awesome about your magic road fairies, Kristin. Our state takes care of the highways, but it really depends on each city here if they plow or not. My sister is in the next city over, and she said they never do her roads. Fun.

same here people in Burke county are going nuts. We are in Valdese which is an hour from Asheville in one direction and an hour to Charlotte in the other direction. Im worried about my grandmother in law in Andrews, shes 84 living alone.
 
Looks like we need an NC meetup haha :D Lots of us here! I shopped yesterday so we could just chill for the next few days.
 
I just found out my city usually uses 1,500 tons of road salt for a three day winter event, and we have only 400 tons due to a supply issue from the contracted company. This should be fun! :eek:

Yeah, Dad loved the weather as well. The lady he was seeing was an old friend of him and Mom (along with her husband who passed a year before my mom). They had lived in Ohio and chose to retired to NC. So he decided to move down there instead of the constant traveling back and forth.

They were there one winter when they had an awful ice storm. There was damage to a couple of trees around Martha's house but thankfully, the trees didn't hit the house when they came down. But since they both had lived in Ohio for over 60 years, they knew what to do to prepare for the weather. And, they made the decision to stay off the roads during that time :thumbup:

The state district I live in does a great job on the roads they are responsible for (interstate and state highways). The county does a pretty good job as well on the roads they are responsible for. Then there are the towns/villages and the townships in the county (rural county). I don't know about the other towns but my town could be better. Main roads get plowed but some of the other streets are hit or miss. Years ago, they would pile the snow from downtown on a street 2 blocks away (a main street) and would block it. It is the street next to the fire station which exited on a different street. They can't do that anymore since the fire station got an addition and now has the trucks exiting right where they always piled the snow! I took the street to go to work and always had to go on a side street that wasn't plowed good to get around the pile of snow. They would pile it until they had time to load it in dump trucks to dump it in the river behind downtown.

I also do not live in city limits so the township I live in is responsible for the roads. I am very happy with them. There are over 300 houses in my housing addition so they do our roads 1st since the rest of the township is country roads. We'll have completely cleared roads in our addition but the city road that feeds into it will still have snow on it and it is a main road in the city limits. So I'm glad I don't live in city limits!!!

Thankfully even though we've had snow this year, it hasn't been too bad. We did have 5 to 7 inches in early December but it actually melted away rather quickly since temps got higher than normal. The other snows have been maybe an inch at the most so they haven't use much salt. We should be good for this weekend.
 
Well, I am too warm here in Central Florida. We had a hard freeze last week but this week we are high 70s to almost 86 on Sunday, then back down to a high in the 60s. So obviously pray for us :D:D:D
 
Here in Maine the forecast has changed multiple times this week. As of now, it looks like we are going to get about a foot of snow Sunday night into Monday, and since it is going to be super cold as well, we may end up out of school both Monday and Tuesday because our high school is used as a warming shelter. We'll see what happens.
It's been an unusually snowy and cold winter here this year after years of pretty mild winters.... to have already used 2 snow days and potentially a third one before the end of January is crazy. After the 3 snow days, we switch to remote days though, so there's that. The latest we'll get out of school is June 16th. Still later than recent years, but I'll take it. ;)
 
I'm in PNW- so like you Kristin- we've had a really mild (warm for the most part) winter. I think this storm is supposed to be cold for us, but not anything crazy. And I'm sad about no snow. I think we've had measurable snow maybe twice so far & then it's all melted. :(
 
Kristin, I cannot even imagine living "in the mountains" - I think that would be AH-MAZING!!

All we have here are corn fields and small hills - lol. We've gotten a bit of snow this week, nothing to be concerned about, but tomorrow the temps are to dive. The wind chills are to be between 35 and 40 BELOW zero. I usually work Fridays for a couple of hours, but went in today instead, because I am not going anywhere tomorrow!!
 
It's colder than normal here in South Eastern MI, between snow/cold the kids are on their 3rd snow day this week.

I could do without the negative temps, but actually, the roads have been terrible here, we've had a lot of blowing snow. But aside from that, it's not that bad here, but we also aren't suppose to get hit with all the craziness the southern part of the country is. I'm sure my family & friends in Florida/Georgia are freakin' out.

After living in Alaska and North Japan, I always think it's funny when we start canceling or shutting everything down here for just the small amounts of snow that they do, but they just aren't set up to handle it here.

Our county if very rural, so they can't get all the backroads cleared usually, 3 or 4 inches of snow usually cancel school. It's kind of crazy.
 
Hi, waving from Texas, where gas stations are empty, huge Texas grocery stores are cleaned out and propane can't be found. Even our firewood guy only had half our firewood b/c his local supplier was out. I mean it's 3 days.
 
We live outside of Nashville, Tn and it is supposed to be a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. We were in Tennessee when the bad ice storm of 94 hit and we were without electricity for five days. Some folks were without it longer. The hard thing is that at the time all we had were waterbeds. You cannot sleep on a waterbed without electricity no matter how many blankets you layer on it. The cold goes right down to your bones. We got rid of them as soon after that as we could! I am hoping we do not have ice that brings down power lines. We have all been eyeing my neighbor's front yard full of Bradford Pear trees with two of them entwined in the power lines. It won't be good if those trees start breaking. She already lost one of them. Two of them are close to our house. I know Bradford Pear trees are pretty etc. but they can be so dangerous. In Tennessee, if a neighbor has a tree that falls on your house, it is your responsibility to pay for the removal and any damage to your house.
 
I'm in PNW as well. No snow this winter at all - we just ended a 10 day inversion (gray, completely overcast, some heavy fog), so I am just thankful for some sun. It's been a weird winter so far.

I have greatly appreciated our PNW winter so far. Hoping for a run clear of snow and ice this year!!
 
I also live in an area very used to large amounts of snow, and all we are getting out of this is cold weather. Feeling pretty lucky here. Yes, it's like negative a billion, but at least we aren't getting feet of snow in areas that normally get dustings.
 
We live outside Philly and depending on what app or channel you use, we are anywhere between 8-20 inches lol. But I love the snow. We have a generator and I have chili in the crockpot and hubby is home and kids are all safe at their locations so its allll good.

I have no issues driving myself in the snow... just the other peeps on the road lol. My dad made me learn to drive in the snow in my mustang with cinder blocks and kitty litter in the hatch, but now I'm spoiled with 4 wheel drive, and I work from home.

I love that we live where we get 4 beautiful totally different seasons to enjoy.

We made some progress on our driveway, but it's a coin toss as to whether i can get out tomorrow to get to work (my employer and the hospital I contract for have been sure to remind me that I am "essential"). We are under a level 3 snow emergency, so non-emergency travel is discouraged.

Around shoveling, it's finishing scrapbook pages and the quilting of a t-shirt quilt for a friend of mine (just the binding to go- w00t!) and conference championship football.

I'm northwest of Columbus by about 90 miles. I ended up with around 8 inches but others in the area have measured closer to 10. I have a lot of drifting around my house so the total may actually be closer to 10. Level 3 here as well but since I'm retired, I'm good.

Funny thing happened though today. I have an Amazon order that was supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I got an USPS notice today that it was "Out For Delivery" TODAY! It is small enough to fit in the mailbox so I figured I'd let it sit there until tomorrow. I checked the tracking later and got the notice that they were "unable to attempt delivery due to hazardous or unsafe weather conditions". I laughed so hard. I'm actually fine with it not coming until Tuesday if that happens since it isn't something I need right away.
 
I live an hour from Ashville NC we got more snow than we usually do, it passed the solar lights in my yard and it's staying
the weird thing here is everyone runs to the store it was like Christmas shopping at Walmart. I was there to by hay and pellets and it was crazy.
hope everyone keeps/kept their power.
 
Checking in from Charlotte. We got record breaking snow yesterday and it's so beautiful. We've had "dustings" since I've been here in 2012 but this is the first real snow and it is sooo coool. Our dogs are having the best time!

We are getting a much needed break from the snow right now. It's just so cold. I wrenched my back shoveling Tuesday and it's still not better. I'm hoping I get better before the next dumping of winter white stuff.

Do you get the lake effect snow where you are? I have a friend in Mentor that gets that all the time.

No snow melting here with the temps well below freezing all week. Had a few flurries yesterday but no measurable accumulation but my driveway that had none on it the other day has a light coating. Hopefully the sun will deal with that today. I just want the temps to get above freezing because my bones are feeling these cold temps and my electric heat pump is constantly running. Next month's electric bill is going to be high!
 
While the rest of North Carolina got BURIED- my town and the surrounding area were stuck in a “dry slot”. I kid you not- it was wild. Record breaking snow EVERYWHERE else… not even flurries here!!! I spent the day being a little disappointed because despite not loving winter, we had planned for this and my kids were so excited for real snow. I mean, if it’s going to be cold it might as well snow!!

Well, thankfully the dry slot closed at like 9pm and we finally got a little something. It’s not much, maybe 1.5-2 inches… which is still a lot for us and will keep the kids out of school id guess a minimum of a couple day. But I was actually glad that the kids had nice, fluffy snow to play in this morning instead of an ice storm like we got last week.

The memes really sent me tho. lol.

I just want to point out that it snowed on the first day of summer here last year :P
 
I'm done with the snow. And Canada? Take your cold weather too!

We set the record for our state - 14.5". Which is minimal when you are used to snow, but when you usually get 17" in the whole season, we are struggling. And since Canada sent their frigid air here, it's not melting. We have loaders and dump trucks picking up the snow from the street corners and dumping it out of town. We have a lot of kids that walk to school, and it's causing major issues.

Can winter be over? I'd love a few days over zero degrees.

it's not unusually to have snow in the Seirra Mountains of Nevada. We had so many snowy last days of school. Crazy mother nature
