The votes are in and since a couple of our top picks won't release until later in the year I thought we'd start out with The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.

So grab your copy and let's get started!

This thread is for initial thoughts, expectations, assumptions, etc - I'll be back mid-month with a list of specific discussion questions for us all to dig into.

Just a reminder that book club is for everyone! Feel free to join us if and when you can - no pressure to keep up with every month... you can also pop in later in the year and catch up on the convo if you're a slow reader or had a long wait to get your copy. It's all very low-key.

I'm excited to embark on this literary adventure with you in 2026!

Fun! I tend to get into a rut and read the same genre (and sometimes even the same books), so this will be a fun challenge to add some variety to my reading.

Will we read a different book each month?

I called the library in our county- the librarian immediately told me, "That's a good book!" The book isn't available for check out until after January 10th. I hurried and ordered one online. I'm excited. Thank you.

i got this for our book club and i read a lot of good reviews about this, excited to start reading!

"Abinia," he said, pointing toward the chickens, "you look at those birds. Some of them be brown, some of them be white and black. Do you think when they little chicks, those mamas and papas care about that?"

I'm smiling with these words.

I'm back again-just wanted to share. Abinia's memory came back as she witnessed the death of baby Henry. They noticed her rocking; they knew something was wrong. "You tell Mama Mae what the trouble is. Mama's going to take the pain from you."

Oh the nature and love of our dear mothers' comforting us and settling us down and how we trust in them. So many times they can make it better.

Mama's here.

I need my mother. She died when I was 21. She's been gone for 40 years now. I miss her; many times she settled me down and resolved my worries.

Just finished Chapter 24. Gosh, it is hard for me to put down! I'm not going to share anything, because I don't want to spoil things for those who have not read as far as me.

Girls, thanks for popping in; I'm social and love to chat especially when reading a great book or going to a movie with friends. I take these activities serious in life instead of just for enjoyment. My husband always teases me, "Kimberly, this isn't real!" BUT TO ME IT IS.

I loved this quote: "I smiled but had no answer. I could not explain to her my happiness. I knew only that (???) was back, and up in the big house, I had a baby to love. One who needed me."

We all need a purpose in life - several is even better. And taking care of someone or something who/that we love makes life so rewarding!

I'm late out of the gate. I've reserved a copy at my library and they should pull it today for me to pick up. I love love love that they have the reserve system, and I can just pull up to the drive through window to grab my book!

I'm so glad everyone is enjoying the book so far! I love to hear everyone's first impressions and favorite quotes.

In about a week I will start a second thread and mark it with *spoilers*

In there I will post a few discussion questions so we can dig in a little deeper into some of the themes and things the book brings up for us.

I haven't had a moment and sit down to compile anything yet, but going forward I can aim to post this on week 2 instead of 3 for our early birds - and when everyone else catches up you can pop in. The SPOILERS tag should keep everyone else at bay until they're ready.

How does that sound?

Karli, that sounds great! I know I won't go in the Spoilers thread until after I have finished the book.

Karlimarie, THANK YOU for doing this. It's been so fun to carry a book around in my arms.

"Jump the Broom!" I love what this means.

I just finished the audio of this- SO great! I love that with audio you get all the accents- just feels so real. I loved this book- great pick! I gave it 4 stars, only because I felt the ending just wrapped up so quickly, I wanted more. I came to really love all the characters & the ending just felt rushed to me.

I finished reading the book last night. I kinda neglected some housework to do so, as it was compelling! I will probably read the companion book, Glory Over Everything, later.

LOL, Krista! Of course, I had to look up The Correspondent. It's highly rated and quite popular. Kindle version is on sale for $1.99 today, so I grabbed it. It's not like I don't have hundreds of other books on my Kindle. LOL

I just finished this over the weekend! Loved it so much.
I've searched the threads and can't find the list for the year. Can someone point me in the right direction so I can reserve the February book?

Sorry, I'm working my way down a long to-do list this morning!
