I'm in need of a phone upgrade (have a 14 ProMax) and I checked out the iPhone 17 ProMax last night, the camera seems really good. Has anyone already upgraded? Is the camera as good in real life situations as it is in store?

I purchased an iPhone 17 Pro Max on release day, and it is absolutely incredible. My prior phone was the iPhone 11 Pro, so it's a significant jump for me ... but the photos I've been getting are gorgeous. Having the one-touch button to launch the camera without having to sign in to the phone? Total game changer. I can start shooting pics just as quickly as I can when picking up my mirrorless camera. And 42 megapixel resolution on the iPhone? That's what my mirrorless shoots. Crazy!
The biggest suggestion I would give someone looking at this phone is to get one size up on storage from what you think you'll need. So, I originally planned on getting the 512GB model; I invested in the 1TB model instead. The photographs are larger, and you'll be shooting more of them, so having the extra space will lengthen the usable life of your phone.

Now, I can't wait until my ShiftCam case arrives - should be later this month - along with my new ShiftCam Pro Grip. (I'm upgrading from their Maker package; that grip totally changed my relationship with my iPhone camera. It's like holding a proper camera rather than a rectangular piece of glass.)
I own three of their LensUltra lenses, but the "universal mount" I had to use with my iPhone 11 Pro didn't work well, so they've sat in a drawer. With the new case, I'll have threaded mounts right over the iPhone's camera, and I can screw the lenses right onto the case, quick and easy. I own their 240mm telephoto lens, the 75mm macro, and the 16mm wide-angle. It's going to give me a small, lightweight, entirely mobile kit and I cannot WAIT to put it through its paces!

Excellent tips, thanks! And I am so curious to hear what you think about the ShiftCam, I did the Kickstarter for the Pro version but I always felt like my phone was going to fall off.

I’m still on 13 and even though it’s paid off and I’m due for an upgrade I’ve been putting it off… but the draw of a better camera is verrrrry tempting!!
I took the plunge but I just grabbed the iPhone17 and not the pro. I upgraded from the 13 Pro and when I got really real about what I needed, I decided that the 17 was more than enough, and I like the look (and the colors) more than the pro option.
I don't need the telephoto camera really, and the 17's 48mp camera is already a huge improvement over the 13 pro. All 3 models get the improved selfie cam, so I just decided to go for a more modest upgrade.
I absolutely love it. The low-light photos are a HUGE improvement over the 13pro. No regrets!

I've always gotten a ProMax since they started making them, I've especially loved the micro camera so having a better telephoto camera is all I need to make it perfect. I love my long lens DSLR but it's such a pain to haul around on vacations, since I have a good tripod with an iPhone mount, this could make it so I don't need a big camera at all.

Yeah, I know what you mean. My husband's rule is that we have to pay cash for our phones (after paying off the house last year, we're 100% debt-free and he wants to remain that way) and I managed to negotiate that I'd pay half from my discretionary spending if the household accounts pick up the other half. Still, that's a hefty price tag, and I put it off as long as I possibly could; knowing I'd be sitting with this phone for another 5-7 years before my next upgrade, I wanted the biggest feature set I could get.

I'm only 2 series ahead of you but the difference in the 14 to the 17 is amazing. There is a physical camera button on the side of the phone !!! That alone is worth the upgrade to me.

Maybe I'll wait to grab the 17 when they come out with the 18! lol I can't pay that price for a phone! It's insane! It's as much as a laptop!
