NextCloud?

Does anyone use NextCloud or know anything about it?

Back story - we have a very old PC we use just for taxes, because TurboTax can't be used on a Mac. So we went looking for options (as it barely wanted to start up the other day) and the guy at Costco - who was very Anti-Mac lol - asked what we'd be using it for, etc. and when I said some graphics work (Photoshop and Lightroom, and Mac Photos) he asked how I was backing up. I said iCloud and BackBlaze, and he said I should look into Next Cloud.

Apparently it's a way to back up that is better than iCloud or Backblaze? I can google, but I also trust you guys' opinions more than google lol
 
Hmmm, interesting! I just went through a big PITA with Backblaze (getting changed $200 total for an upgrade and overage I didn't end up needing ... waiting for the refund that would take a "few days" ... it's now going on 8 days ... smh) - so I'm very intrigued now. I'll be following too!
 
I only use external drives. I have so many TB that it was a nightmare to use any online service. I keep several copies to be safe but it is a lot of work to maintain. We also feel a bit weird about sharing our personal documents to an online server that could easily be hacked (even if they say they that won't happen, there is always a chance).
 
I'm looking for a Backblaze replacement so I'll be watching too. I just had another major incident with Backblaze where one of my drives had not backed up for months and I didn't realize it. I've ALWAYS included every drive in backups and never changed any settings. I'm tired of them screwing up things and always having to worry if my stuff is actually backed up. The whole point is for me to not have to worry about that. :glare:

Not to hijack your thread... do you or anyone know how to see what is actually backed up with Backblaze. That's who I use. Years ago, when I used Carbonite, I loved the little green dot that showed up on a file to show me that Carbonite had it. Backblaze doesn't have that. On their site, they have a place to click that says View/Restore files. But, when I go there, it wants to know which method of restoration I want...which I'm not wanting. Down below that is, I guess, where I can see files. It just doesn't seem like a super easy way to check. Now that I just went and looked again, I guess I know what I'm looking at.

So, how often do y'all spot check what's been saved?
 
A quick google shows that it is not a backup service like BackBlaze, Carbonite or iDrive but more like Dropbox, Google Drive and Office 365.

Doesn't sound easy to use to me but I'm sure someone with a tech background would be fine with it.

I no longer use BackBlaze because it stopped backing up files and I didn't get the notifications even though the option was checked. I quit it 6 years ago.

I now use iDrive. I get a popup after every backup that has details of what files were backed up. It tells me if it is an incremental backup (a file that has changed) or a full backup file (first time being backed up). When my computer updates after the scan and I don't get the popup, there is a place in the program that I can view an activity log. Since I've only been using it since Dec 1, I do check it every day. So far, so good.
