A friendly reminder...

Back up your hard drives! I purchased a new EHD in May because my old one was getting glitchy and I was worried it was on the outs. Anyway, that new one failed completely last week and absolutely everything was gone (because I wiped the old one!)

So why am I not losing my s**t over this? Well, I pay for Backblaze backup, and they sent me a new EHD with everything on it. Nothing was lost. I promptly copied everything back onto my old EHD (which is stilling running just fine) as an extra backup, and returned the "new" crappy one to Amazon. I had to jump through a few hoops to get them to agree to a refund, but in the end I'm getting my refund and I have all my data back.

So this is your friendly reminder to back up one way or another...

I've had a few big computer losses over the years and I now put all photos and digi files on backblaze. It took weeks to do the initial backup with them but now it just runs in the background.

Phew, glad you have BB! I have it, too. I also have 4 EHDs at home and 2 off-site. Plus Amazon Photos, for (you guessed it lol) my photos. Out of all my digital items, my photos are my #1 priority. (I bet many people here feel the same!)

For those reading this thread, I'd like to remind everyone that having a "backup" implies you have another copy of your files, because a backup means it's a second copy. So if you don't keep files anywhere else except on your computer or only on one EHD, then that isn't a backup: it's your sole copy. Following the Rule of Three can be very helpful when it comes to backing up digital files. BackBlaze has info about that.

I'm not good for backup, I have to admit.
I have few hard drives for my photos, some pages and that's all.

Thanks for the reminder... this has been on my list for a while now. Several years ago I lost a bunch of precious photos when an EHD crashed. :(

For those who have Backblaze, is the $99 per year option the one that you use?

Since my last hard drive failure, in addition to Backblaze, I'm updating my external harddrive back up once a month.

I keep a folder that I keep a copy of any digital goodies I've downloaded during that month that I can easily move over, as well as my monthly family photos folder, or scrapbook layouts.

Since I tend to organize my photos/layouts by year/month, that makes it pretty easy with this new system. I always hated making sure my external drive was backed up before because I never felt like I had a good system in place.

I can't use Backblaze. Had it for a long time and ended up having major issues with it causing interruptions with my internet connection. Since I got rid of it, I have had zero problems with my internet disconnecting intermittently. I actually found out that Backblaze had not even done any backups for over a month when I lost a computer during a power outage during a tornado warning. I never got the notice that no backups had been done either. Thankfully I hadn't been scrapping during that time so didn't lose any layouts. And, I never delete photos from my camera cards so I could redownload any that were missing.

That being said, I have 3 EHD's with all my important stuff on them. Whenever I download photos from my cameras or buy new kits, I copy them to the EHD's during the process. I keep a spreadsheet that tells me the last time I did any backups.

I have thought about trying iDrive, but I'm waiting. My neighborhood is being upgraded to fiber in the next few months, so once it is in place I might try an online backup again.

I have Backblaze also, but in one of the restores a few years back, I didn't realize I had to go back to the day the computer crashed... so I lost A LOT...not too worried with the kits, but the photos.... I cried for weeks...so now I am also backing with Amazon Photos (we have Prime, is included in the membership) plus I have a couple of external hard drives that I keep backing with....
Also now (I realised this in 2021 when my iMac crashed) Apple has cloud back up, so in 2021, when I got the new iMac and turned it on...all the photos were there...
but you are right, Backblaze is wonderful, especially the girls at the customer service, they have dealt with my technical ignorance and guided me through a lot some years ago... the guys have less patience with me, so I make sure I suggest that one of the girls replies :)

That's a great point too!

That's a great idea! I think I might start doing the same. I already file my photos in a similar manner, so it wouldn't be a huge change to move things on a monthly basis like that.

If you try iDrive, make sure you double check the backup. I tried it out and it turned out it wasn't backing up anything, just running and looking like it was backing something up.

We had the same problem, with opposite services!

I use Backblaze. I use the one user option, that lets me back up everything, even my external hard drive. I had to use it for a restore also, and it worked great! I was really impressed.

I get an email that tells me the last backup and such so I know it's still working. And about monthly, I go in and restore random files to see that they are there.
