Homemade Greeting Cards

Does anyone use scrapbook kits to make homemade birthday/anniversary/etc cards to give to family & friends. What tips & tricks do you use? TIA

Not as much as I used to... now I usually only make invites for my son's birthday parties (pre covid).

My tips are to build your card in your design software as you would a layout, resizing etc... and then pull each element onto a 8.5x11 page to print (cramming as much on it to save paper). Foam adhesive is a great way to give "life" to a card, building up layers makes it look more high end... adding some glitter glue to add a bit of sparkle... add ribbon and other traditional scrapbooking elements also helps make it look more professional. Make interactive card are my favorite thing to do! Where you pull a tab and something moves or up open up the card and an element "pops" up.

I'm no expert in card making, but I do like using digi supplies to make cards and to decorate my planner. I usually do it all in my scrapping program (I use PSE) and then move it onto paper sized document to print. I have a Silhouette machine, so I use that to cut out the pieces. One fun thing I did was actually use a template and shrunk it to fit the size of the card. Here is the layout and then the card so you can see how I used that template as inspo for the card.

I do, but I make them completely digital then print a flattened file, just like I would for layouts. Sometimes I'll add a few physical gems, just a small touch of physical materials. I bought envelopes and size my digital file accordingly. Then I pull it onto an 8.5x11 background before printing. If the card has white sections around the edges, do a 1 or 2 point stroke in a very light gray around the finished card so you'll know where to cut.

I like the idea of using a template! Will definitely look into that. What kind of Silhouette machine do you have? Is that like a Cricut?

Not as much as I used to since my laser printer died, but love it. I would do an entire design of a card and print and sometimes just print papers and play like any other papers.

The Silhouette prints the digital stuff on paper AND cuts it out for you??

I have a Cricut but rarely use it. I wish I had the time and passion to create things but I just don't... :(

No, the Silhouette only does the cutting. I send what will be cut to my regular printer and then it goes through the Silhouette machine and cuts everything out with the use of registration marks so it knows where to cut. :)

oh that sounds complicated! lol So you have to mark around every single piece? Is it a tedious process?

Nope, it's just a click of a button that puts the registration marks for you if you are doing a print and cut project.

I've designed them, then printed them out and put the on a pre-scored card (cuz I'm lazy when it comes to scissors ...), haven't tried lately though!
 
I’ve been researching cutting machines all day trying to find one to play with... so much potential!!!

This is exactly why I look longingly at the cutting machines (and other fun craft and kitchen things) but force myself not to buy. I know that I have soooo many ideas and very poor follow through. Digital scrapbooking albums are the only things I seem to both start and complete.

Since stamped images have space between parts of the image, it would be hard to cut out. I have taken the stamped image and did an offset to it so that there is a solid border around it that I can cut with keeping the stamped look. Not sure if that is what you are talking about or not.
