So, I normally back up to 2 places: an EHD (when I remember) and then I also use Backblaze to back up both my internal and external drives. Well, my internal HD was starting to make some clicking noises, so I decided I had better back up to the external but because of a bunch of new photos, the data wouldn't fit on the EHD. I deleted my last back up to make room and it still wouldn't fit, so then I had NO backup on my EHD (since I deleted the earlier backup). While I was waiting for a new larger EHD to arrive from Amazon, my internal drive failed (of course).
I ordered a restore file from Backblaze on an EHD which arrived in about 4 days. Everything worked flawlessly and all my files have all been restored. WHEW!!
Lessons learned: a local backup is great and convenient if you are diligent about it but -- because backing stuff up is not my full time job -- it isn't completely reliable. It was totally worth it to have Backblaze backing up my stuff automatically in the background. I know the online backups have problems sometimes but it worked for me!
DON'T FORGET TO BACK UP YOUR STUFF!
