Another Behind The Times Question: Sharing Eeader Accounts

(Don't kill me, LW, but I don't own a Kindle or any kind of eeader or tablet.)

My friend was showing me last weekend how she and her siblings as well as a couple of others (so, like, 6 or 7 people) all share one book account. Whenever anyone buys a book, they all have access.

How does this work? I could be persuaded to get an eeader if I didn't have to buy all the books myself.

Does anyone else do this? Who do you share with? Do you enjoy it or wish you had a personal account? Anyone recommend NOT doing this?

I have a Kindle Keyboard, 1st Generation Kindle Fire, New Fire HD 10' Tablet and have the Kindle app on my phone, plus my dad and moms phones and my grandpa. We are all linked to my Amazon account so anytime I buy books / get free ones, as long as each person is signed into my Amazon account on said device the can access any of my content.

Plus, you don't have to buy and eeader if you have a smart phone - you can just download the Kindle app to said smart phone and enjoy reading!

I am a hopeless romantic and usually only read torrid love stories / historical romance so my poor family has to wade through all my Romance to get what they want, but just choose which to download from my content. I haven't had a problem sharing. I mean I should get the most out of my account and let others share in my freeness.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to share like that. It's been a long time since I used my kindle, but I know you can borrow books from the library and you can lend a book to someone from your ereader.
 
yeah. i'd never do that. I enjoy supporting the authors I read. imo, that's sort of like sharing digikits with someone.

I don't even share an account with my daughter

I agree - but I do share an account with Cheyanne; however, we have very very different reading tastes and we never read the same things, so we're still supporting all our authors :D It's just easier to have it all under one account and one payment option.
 
well, I'd assume most family members DO share an account. My daughters are much younger and definitely don't need to read what I read.

Not sure if this is true where you are but all the libraries here in Phoenix share a digital library, so if you have a library card, you have access to an enormous amount of books to download from their website (free!). Sometimes you have to wait for the newest/most popular books but I just keep a big "wish list" going and download ones as they become available.
 
I borrow e-books from the library and read on my iPad.

I would never share an account with anyone outside of my family. That would be file sharing and just as bad as sharing you digi stash.

Within a family I think sharing a book account is very ok. If you buy a "real" book anyone in your family can pick it out from your bookshelf which is the same thing I think.

Me and my mum used to share an account - I had already had my kindle a year or two when she got hers and it was easier to just link it up to my account. I soon came to regret it - every couple of days she would go on a downloading spree of free books and I would get constant emails! So I eventually created a new account

I think the important part is sharing the CC info within all accounts? It seems similar to sharing your iTune account with your family, where you pay for the app once and rest of your family don't have to pay for the same app. If you're planning to 'share' with friends, it wouldn't work, because I don't think I would feel comfortable sharing my credit card info for the account (if I read it right).
 
We just got kindles, and so far we've only been using the library. It's really great. I've even borrowed an audio book to listen to at work. But I think within the family it's fine.

That's what I was thinking, LOL. We have 3 different Amazon accounts for our family of 5. I have one, the younger 2 share one, and the oldest has his own. All 3 kids have Kindle Fires. I decided I didn't want the kids on my account because many of my books are not meant for elementary schoolers. Once they move beyond Free Time (a kid safe environment for younger kids) there's no way to stop the kids from accessing anything on the account. Oldest has his own because he does a lot of game buying with gift cards and Amazon coins, and it's easiest to keep things straight when the other 2 can't access his gift cards.

I use the Family Library with my younger kids' account, and there is a way to do it without sharing credit card access. Unfortunately, that also greatly limits what Amazon will let you share. It's been too long since I set it up; I mostly use it so I can add apps purchased with their account to both of their Fires.
