Shadows on stitches

I can never get stitches to look right. Anyone have any tips on how to shadow stitches to make them look realistic?

You buy Jenn Barrette's shadows package and then hit "stitching"! Lol! At least that is how I do it!

I have my stitch style in my all of my templates that include stitches. But, I will admit that it's not the way I shadow all stitches. Some stitches barely need a shadow and some seem fatter. Sometimes I do my basic stitch shadow and then put it on a separate layer and push it around with the smudge tool or I go over it with a light eraser in some spots.

Using linear burn, I start with:

Opacity 75%
Distance 2
Spread 0
Size 3

Then I adjust the opacity as needed.

I never usually shadow stitches when I scrap because often they're already shadowed. Make it very small and light, like 25 opacity, distance 3 & size 5.

I adjust the color based on what they're on top of
