I don't know what I did...got a new EHD. Thought I moved over my digi-scrap supplies and completed LO's to it. Then I deleted them off my local HD. Emptied my trash. And now they won't pull up on my EHD OR my LHD. I'm totally freaking out! I had over 30,000 items in my digi-scrap folder. :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

have you tried shutting down your computer while your EHD is plugged in and on? then unplug the EHD, restart the computer and plug the EHD back in. see if that helps. sometimes mine says there's nothing on it and then I go through that process and it all shows up

OMG, that worked! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I must go recover from my panic attack now.

I totally gasped when I read your post.

Maybe your new EHD is a dud? I think if I was struggling with all that I would either upload everything to an online storage place (crash pad is offering 20% off right now so it would be $40 for the year, they might even give you a free trial) or put it back on your HD while you figure it out, or return the EHD for a different one.

I am looking at getting a second back up EHD so I will have two. I have had great luck with the EHD I got from Apple (it's a rugged- the one with the orange rubber around it), my kids dropped it down a flight of stairs. I need military grade stuff, since I have toddlers LOL. I have heard that people around here like My Passport, I was considering one of those too. I have nothing but good things to say about my rugged though.

That's what I got - My Passport. I must not be doing something right.

It sounds like a loose cable or connections or something. I have a My Book and two My Passports as my backup for the My Book(they aren't big enough to solo). the my passports are over 5 years old and still running strong.

Oh gosh, I totally understand your panic. I'd get online backup for your ehd if I were you. I've had two ehds die on me but luckily they were backed up to crashplan and I didn't lose a thing.

My heart just skipped a few beats for a moment there!!... So glad you still have everything!

Good! whew!! You're "am I doing something wrong?" comment made me worry it wasn't hooking up still. I'm so glad it's working! That had to be scary.

For backup of an ehd Crashplan is great. They never delete anything no matter how lang ago since it was plugged in.

From experience do NOT rely on EHD. I did the same as I was originally scrapping on the computer we use for the business. Put it all on a ehd (pages, photos and supplies), deleted it off the pc and the ehd crashed - it was only 3 months old!

Most of my photos were on disks (lost about 8 months worth) but everything else was gone. I couldn't retrieve it from the pc and they couldn't get the ehd recovered either.

I now use Backblaze online back up and no ehd at all.

EEK! :(

I use crashplan to back up my EHD. if it stopped working without a back up, i would DIE! that's YEARS of pictures right there. online back up is a must!! plus if something like a fire in your house were to happen, all your pics are backed up. an ehd can be replaced, but not precious pics!

I'm so happy you got your external working. It does sound like a connection problem--wire or something. I have about 6 externals--two of them are passports (love them) but I have so much STUFF--I have all my photos on probably three of them--I'm so paranoid of losing them!! I have a lot of my photos on a computer at my daughters house also. (in another state!) just in case!! Another daughter has a lot of them too--
I don't have online backup. my husband is paranoid of that!! Yeah, we make a good pair!! I'm about ready to buy yet another external as the ones I have now are full. I have all the layouts on at least two externals--my supplies aren't backed up--just photos and layouts!

I would consider copying things back to your HD until you feel confident your EHD is working properly and/or you have online back up in place. That's not normal behavior. I had a WD EHD do the same thing to me right after I purchased it and I never recovered the files (thankfully they were all still on my HD). EHDs are no more reliable than you HD, so IMO they should only be used as back up, not a primary source. I'm glad things seem to be working and I hope you don't have any other issues.

Oh my, I would have been freaking just like you did! Glad it is back up... I hope you figure out a plan for back ups of the EHD!

Every EHD I've had has developed usb/connection issues. I don't know if it's from so much use or what. Also in your folders, make sure nothing's hidden. One time my husband did this whole pc recovery thing & I noticed "hide folders" was checked.

I can't afford online backup, so what I do is I backup everything into DVDs (after moving them into my EHDs)... plus, my internet connection isn't that great. I don't know how long it'll take to back up all 400GB+ of data on my Macbook.

Anyway, sooo glad to hear that everything's fine now!
