Go back up RIGHT NOW!!!

I just got home from dropping my iMac off at the Apple Store (which is a 2.5 hour drive from my house) and it was admitted to the hospital. My 5 month old baby's motherboard failed and needs to be replaced. The diagnostics couldn't even read what operating system it was running, so there's a good chance they'll need to reformat it and all my data would be lost.

THANKFULLY, I have everything backed up. While it's super frustrating to be without my computer for a whole week, this could have been devastating. If I didn't have my stuff all backed up, I'd be a sobbing mess and worried sick over this.

So, if you're not backed up, get to it!!

PHEW!!!!! Good thing you had it backed up! I just had a panic attack for you!

I gladly pay $5/month for peace of mind... :)

Sorry about your baby...I'd go crazy at home a week without mine.

I'm sorry you'll be computerless for a while, but it's great that you won't lose anything. I have Crashplan working all the time, but thanks to your reminder I'm going to plug in my EHD right now.

Still searching for an online back up space wich is not too expensive and had unlimited space (or alot) Any ideas?

Well, no new kit from Megan this weekend. :(
I have Carbonite but it doesn't back up my EHD. That's a problem.

I use CrashPlan and I'm pretty sure it will backup EHDs. I picked CrashPlan because, unlike other services, they keep all your files. Many others will delete things from their servers if it's deleted from your HD after 30 days. I accidentally deleted a folder when I had Backblaze and I didn't realize it until many months later. They didn't have that data anymore so I couldn't restore it. That's when I switched.

Ugh Megan. That super stinks. I hate being computerless, as the everyone who suffered with me through my hard drive failure last year can attest. I was pretty whiney. Lol. Luckily, I was also backed up and I didn't lose anything. But still . . . I neeeeeed my puter. Hang in there!

Like Backblaze, Crashplan is about $5 a month for unlimited backup. I've got about 400 GB backed up with them. I used Backblaze for years before switching; I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I finally switched because I back my laptop up online and to a local EHD. I was using 2 different programs to do it and didn't like the one I was using to back up to the EHD. Crashplan can handle both types of backup.

One caution about online backup-the monthly fee is reasonable and you can restore your backed up files via download for free. But with hundreds of GBs backed up, I can't imagine how long it would take to manually download it all if my computer's HD failed. They will mail you everything on a drive, but it's expensive. (I forget exactly how much; $100? $250? Something like that.) So if you currently back up to an EHD, don't stop when you get an online backup service. The online backup is a wonderful insurance policy in case something happens here that takes out both my laptop and my EHD or if I go a few weeks between EHD backups, but when my computer HD dies I restore as much as possible from the EHD so that I can stick to free restores from Crashplan.

Thanks, ladies! I'm not very happy being computerless. :( it could have been so much worse though! They think I should have it back by next Tuesday, then I may have to spend a couple days reinstalling programs and downloading some of my files before I can get back to work.

Ugh, I just hate computer problems!! So glad you have back up! I do mine manually to an EHD - probably not as often as I should though!

uh oh! this is sad Megan... hope it can be fixed soon! ;)
And I reaaally hate doing back up :/ but this is a good reminder!

Well this is good to know. I really don't know much about Carbonite other than it doesn't back up the EHD. Better do some research.

This is good to know Megan! So sorry that you will be without your computer but everything happens for a reason so maybe you just need some you time this week or somebody else is going to need you :)

Glad you got it all backed up, Megan! I hope your baby comes back all fixed soon!
That reminds me I need to back up my stuffs too!

Sorry you have to deal with computer troubles. I had mine die on me the end of last year. Not fun stuff. Glad it was all backed up though! Hope your baby gets back to you soon!

Eek lucky you were all backed up!

And a nice reminder for me because I've got loads of photos that need backed up as I've been slacking!

Computer problem sucks!

My EHD died in December, and it held most of my scrap stash. I had it backed up to Crashplan though and got almost everything back. I actually haven't downloaded everything yet, but it's still there on the Crashplan server for when I get mote storage and have somewhere to put it. I LOVE that they don't delete anything!

My daughter goes back to school next week, so we are going to pack this week full of fun!

thanks goodness you have everything backed up! I lost everything twice and now I back up all photos, layouts, and kits as soon as I download them to our web thingy lol... thats the technical term for it, web thingy. :P

Oh gosh! I would be a blubbering mess too. Thank goodness you thought ahead. I need to back my stuff up pronto!

My EHD fell on the ground a few years back and I lost ALL my pictures and everything else. So now I back everything up on multiple hard discs, memory sticks, cd/dvds and what not. I even have a copy at my parents house in case of fire (and they have a fireproof safe to boot).
I really should get around to do a backup of all my kits though. I just keep putting it off because I keep finding these gorgeous kits to add into my collection.
I need a new hard disc for my birthday, purely for SSD kits and I can back them up every month or so *makes a mental note to write this down in my filofax*.

I'm sorry your baby is hurt and hope everything turns out great in the end.

I really like Crashplan. I use the cloud and the ehd on the desk approaches. Somehow I deleted a while digi store folder and was able to get it back via the backup. The time my hard drive crashed was painless as well other than reloading programs which is never fun.

So, I got a call from the guy at the Apple Store yesterday. They replaced the motherboard and couldn't even access to hard drive, so he told me they had to reformat. Such a bummer, but I was able to order the restore to door drive from Crashplan to get my stuff back (because it would take FOREVER to download my 1 TB of data). $165 for that. Yuck! I've been meaning to buy a new EHD since my last one died and now I'm really wishing I had! Oh well. Just thankful I won't actually lose anything.

He called me back an hour later and they couldn't even get the OS to load, so now they have to replace the hard drive too and I'll be without a computer for a few more days (he had to order some stuff). Blah.
