iPhone 5 and those wanting iPhone4/4s

We are going to wait until late October or early November when our 2 contracts are up and get the 5 for both Chunky and I. I too have never had a smartphone so this is very exciting for me!

We have AT&T also and I'm switching from my Blackberry Torch to an iPhone in November. Cheyanne doesn't want an iPhone because she likes the sliding keyboard for texting and has her iPod Touch for everything else. I only have the $15 a month data plan now and have never come close to going over in a month... I'm hoping I won't need to go up to the $30 plan with the iPhone  I do wish AT&T would come out with a more reasonable data sharing plan though because I'd love to be able to put her Touch on it and the Kindle Fire we have also, especially where we'll be traveling so much next summer. It would be nice to have those devices tapped into internet while we're on the road.

I think the $30 plan is basic for iPhone almost positive there's not a cheaper one. It's the standard data plan for AT&T

We have ATT and the data plans are $30 a phone for 3GB of data each. Texting is $30 for all of us unlimited. So I'm looking for something like that to happen in the future. Buuuut...not holding my breath. :glare:

Mary check back into AT&T. We have 4 iPhones and have a family plan with AT&T. We were grandfathered in with unlimited data and texting not sure if that makes a difference but they do have a shared plan

I *just* got the 4s last week so I guess I'm stuck.

If you're within 30 days, you can return it and get the 5 instead. I had the same thing happen to me with the 3G and 3GS. That was on AT&T, I don't know if its the same for Verizon.

Well that sucks - LOL. I was hoping to keep the $15 a month with the iPhone when I upgrade. Since I work from home most of the time I'm connected with my wifi and don't need to use AT&T to go online, so the smaller data plan works for me :glare:

I just got my 4 two month ago and the hubs already said I have to keep this phone for a year before I even think about getting a new one. I will say that I am very happy with my 4 so far and not really interested in getting a 5 (right now). I also through haven't really looked at the 5 yet because I know I can't afford it.

We're with AT&T and my DH and I both have just the $15/mo data on our iPhones so you can have the lower plan with iPhones. It's the 200MB plan which is plenty for us right now, I'm home all day too so I use our wifi most of the time and Rob teaches so he can't be on his phone during the day anyway.

Really? Can I ask what you pay for a family plan? You know, sometimes when you are in an actual store they have offers that aren't readily seen online. So I will definitely find out. That's really what has been stopping me - the monthly fee, not the initial cost of the phone.

Also, our lower option for data is $20. I wonder why there are such discrepancies?

for 700 shared/rollover voice minutes it's 69.99 for 2 phones then 9.99 for additional lines so it's about 90.00 and that includes unlimited data for us since we had the plans before they went away with unlimited and were grandfathered in. That's unlimited nights/weekends and unlimited mobile to mobile...which we all have AT&T including most of mine and my husband's family so we hardly use our minutes. We have a few other things on our plan so my bill is about $110/month

look at the specs for it though...$20 for 300mb! and it's $20 for each 300MB overage. You can get 3 GB for $30. You need at least 5GB for mobile hotspot tethering if that's ever something you want to do. I've never done it b/c I heard it affects your unlimited so I've been scared to try it.

I think the $20 plan is the old $15 plan..I didn't realize you could get that one with the iPhones

I just looked at my son's data usage and he goes over the 300MB which is why he has the 3G plan.

Sounds like you might have gotten a special deal when you started. We have 5 phones on one plan (since that's all you can have) with 700 minutes, but we also have 4 more phones, unlimited texting for all of us, and one data plan so our bill is around $190. Ugh. And that's why I don't want to add any more $30 data plans.

One thing we do have is free mobile to any mobile, no matter the carrier. It used to just be ATT (which most of my family has), but last time we upgraded a phone, they gave us free to any mobile. So we never use those 700 minutes and have so many rollover minutes that each month we have some expiring.

At a very minimum Verizon offers a price adjustment within 14 days. When we were in the store a couple of weeks ago, the first thing the associate told us was that she preferred that we came back to get our iPhones after the release, but she did tell us we could get a price adjustment if we returned to the store within 14 days. It's worth a try!

I have a Samsung Android and not eligible for upgrade til January. I might consider the 4 if its still at a good price then. :)

I like the size of my 4S, plus I just got it in April anyway, so I'm glad I'm not even having to think about upgrading for a few years!

Mary, this is exactly what mine is as well. Ours is 183 a month (for the same as yours... 4 phones, 1 of them being data) and same as yours for the mobile to any mobile carrier.

I thought Verizon no longer did free upgrades.....will I have to pay 600$ for one?

You can't get the phone for free, but if you are eligible for an upgrade, you get the phone much cheaper than if you aren't. The iPhone 5 will start at $199 for those that are eligible for an upgrade. It will cost much more for those who want to upgrade before they are eligible.

What I want to know is this:

We are on Verizon. We have the unlimited data plans for $30 a month. When we upgrade to new phones, are they going to force us to change our data plans to their current tiered system? I would love to keep the ones we currently have, but I have a feeling we're going to have to switch.

My friend who is with Verizon was told by Verizon that she is grandfathered in, she doesn't have to go to the tiered system. If they even tried to force you, I'd just tell them you will quit and go to a new carrier and I bet they will keep you. Another friend/neighbor of mine had to do that with her plan with AT&T.

Yay! Thanks for letting me know Shawna! I know that I had to specifically ask them if there was a lower data plan - they wanted to automatically sign me up for the $30 plan when I got my Blackberry a few years ago. When I pressed them they said there was a smaller plan.

Looks like Verizon changed their policy on this one in May of this year. So unless you want to pay $600-$700 for your phone, you have to go to the tiered data plans. Bummer.

Im not getting the 5 yet but will get one AFTER we get back from London/Paris at the end of October. Im super excited!

I'm debating whether i should stay with android and get the samsung galaxy III or go with the iphone 5....hmmm, decisions!

that is a total bummer. I love my unlimited data. I would HATE to go to the tiered plans. Guess I'm keeping my iPhone 4 forever.

Well, I still have just the 3gs and I got it when it first came out, in June 2009! So, it's over 3 years old & I'm way overdue for an upgrade! We were planning on just upgrading to the 4s, but we had heard rumors that it was supposed to drop to $49 for an 8gb, but the 16 is the smallest they are doing. So, since it's only half the price instead 1/4 of the price, I'm trying to convince dh to go ahead and let me get the 5! :) We shall see! But, I'll be getting one of the two hopefully by Christmas! & I'll honestly be happy either way!

I just checked on Verizon and I am eligible for an upgrade ($50 discount, so iPhone 5 for $149!) ...BUT it is true that my 'grandfathered' data plan would go away and I would have to go with their tiered plan.

4s with no plans to upgrade for at least a year. I have other things I would rather spend my money on. Having the latest and greatest just isn't enough of a reason for me.
