Cameras, sand, beach- need advice

We've been scraping and saving up for a little vacation this summer. You know I have to take my camera so I was wondering.....is there a way to keep the sand from the beach off of the lens, anything like a filter I can buy? I figure I need to go ahead and start looking. We're going the first of June.
Suggestions please? I have a Nikon D40

No suggestions really, I kept mine in a sealed ziplock bag and only took it out to actually take photos and then put it right back.

I had such a dilemna about taking my DSLR or my PnS to the beach because I didn't want anything to happen to my good camera. Ultimately I'm SO glad I took the DSLR because once you get used to that quality, you almost can't go back!
 
{sniff sniff} I wish I had your problem. :( I have a "cheap" P&S. (My husband would die if he heard me call that camera cheap, lol)
 
I have a UV filter on mine. It's there to protect the lens, really, since I can't tell a difference with or without it. Apparently it filters UV rays - which will be perfect for all those outdoor shots!
 
I keep a uv on mine too. That will help protect the lens from sand but be sure to keep it far away from the rising tide and water. I got a pretty big splash last year but was so lucky that I got everything dried off and nothing was harmed.
 
Don't attempt to take your DSLR with you in a canoe without DOUBLEBAGGING your camera and the additional lens you just 'had' to bring with you. :thumbdown:

I didn't fall in, but an errant splash made its way in the baggie and ruined my kit lens. I suppose a professional might be able to get inside the lens and fix it, but I don't have the money to 'waste' on seeing if that's possible and have a couple other lens I prefer to use, anyways.
 
I lost my best camera to the sand on the beach, not sure how it got in there, but it wouldn't work after that. Keep it sealed, and have a strap around your neck, don't put it down anywhere near the beach!

UV filter is a huge help and also a lens hood. I have taken my Digital Rebel on several beach vacations. I just make sure it's in the case except for when I'm actually taking photos. Have fun!
