Oh Shawna!!! Re: Lap Desks

Aren't you the one with the cute pink lap desk for your notebook computer?

The fans on my MacBook Pro have been running constantly lately, and the poor thing is hot all the time. Right now, I have it sitting on my cookie cooling rack, and the fans have quieted down and the temperature is much more normal. So, I think I need to get some sort of stand so that I'm getting air circulation under the unit. I'd love to get something cute. :D

Any suggestions? Of course, I'll take suggestions from anyone, not just Shawna. I just remember that she had that really cute one. :D

I used one for a while with an older laptop. Mine had fans built into it that helped cool the laptop and circulate air, and it attached to the laptop with a USB cord. Not at all cute, but it worked wonders! Before you try that, though, have you cleaned the fans and tried updating the bios? (If you can do that for a Mac; I know nothing about them! A tech person once had me do that for a laptop running hot, and it fixed the problem because the computer no longer had to work so hard.)

Well, this MBP (and my last one) ran the fan at high speed from day one - constantly - so I don't think it's cause the fan is dirty. I have reset the PRAM, etc. This lappy is only seven months old, and it works like a dream except for the fan always being on. It's noisy, and it drives my husband batty. The last half hour since having it on this cooling rack have been quite remarkable.

Targus makes them and I am sure you can find them at Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Office Max, etc. They're not necessarily cute, but I don't think they look horrible either. Some have extra USB ports in them. Mine works great!

That is a big thing I don't like about laptops. We use a little lap desk that is shaped in such a way as to allow air flow. It works well. I got it free through Buy.com back in the day when they were giving away stuff if you tried Google checkout. LOL

I've had my MBP for 4 years and it's always run hot. Sometimes when I do something intense with Photoshop, it sounds like a jet engine preparing to take off. :D

I tried the Targus cooling pads and I honestly was unimpressed. I had two die on me in the span of a year. For awhile I just used a stack of magazines which actually did help. But my parents came to visit and my mom thought my stack of ratty old magazines was sad (those were her words, haha) so she bought me an actual laptop desk. I can't find one on amazon like mine, but it has a hard top and sides and then a mesh part that sits on my legs which is nice because I don't get hot using it. It's definitely helped though - my MBP is WAY quieter when I use it.

Yes! That sounds exactly like what mine is doing, Lynnette. And, I'd prefer not to have something with a fan, because the sounds of the fan are what I'm trying to get away from in the first place. I'm looking at this one that Apple and Amazon both sell, cause it looks like it will work well on my desk and I can still take my lappy to the couch (VERY important!)

I honestly haven't had any problems with mine and I definitely prefer the sound of the fans in the cooling mat to the sound of the fan whirring in the laptop. But it's obviously all personal preference. :)

I have a black thing I bought at bed-bath & beyond (just like Lynnettes!). It doesn't have built in fans. I love it. Definately makes my computer (& my lap) happier!
