I hope everyone is having fun whether you live in the US and celebrate Independence Day today or whether you are elsewhere and just enjoying a July day. :)

I'm a little bummed today. My husband CHOSE to work today. He works midnights and him having today off would mess up his sleep schedule for the week, especially tomorrow night when DD has her last ball game of the season. So, he is going to work but that means he had to sleep today and I'm on my own with the kids. I am trying so hard to make it a good time for them but they don't love the 4th like I do so they are just being mopey and whiny. Ugh. :p
 
I'm having a good 4th. Our beach plans are likely ruined because it has been raining off and on all day which is a huge bummer, especially for the kids. I love going to the beach for fireworks every 4th, but it seems it rains just about every-other year. :p Actually, it's kind of a relief I don't have to drag myself and all of our beach gear out today. I've been sick this week... some strange cough thing with a painful sore throat, I was afraid it was strep but it's better today. I am super tired and in a bubble from my DayQuil, though. LOL!

I think our backup plan is to go to the movies... with everyone else in the city... hah. :D Women & children will see Brave :wub: (our second time seeing it) since my Aunt & her kids haven't seen it yet and the men will go to Spiderman. Then we'll pick up KFC on the way home! Gotta have yummy junky fried chicken on the 4th. ;)
 
Having a great fourth of July, going to be BBQ later just looking over the sale at SSD and some of the neigbors got some fireworks and will watch them later. Will be going out later to get some sparklers for hayden.
 
Honestly, not having a good 4th at all. It's the 10th anniversary of my dad's passing, so it is always bitter sweet, but we tend to celebrate his life by sharing good memories and laughing a lot. It's what he would want and expect from us, not crying or being sad. Usually we gather as a family, but my sister in in Viet Nam for work, so we are apart this year. I am missing our time together.

What is really ruining it for me this year is the heat and the fact that my AC died yesterday. The repairman said he would be out, but he lied, so now we are all sweltering. My mom and I hung out with a friend yesterday and did some shopping, but are home now and sweating to death. I've got her planted in front of the tv and a fan and myself down in the basement scrapping to beat the heat. :D

I always make my dad's favorite picnic foods for the 4th, West Virginia Hot Dogs, Baked Beans, Deviled Eggs, Brocoli Salad and Strawberry Shortcake, but it's too dang hot to eat much less cook, so I told my family we may have to forego our picnic until the weekend when the ac is fixed.

Not the best holiday, but I am looking forward to the fireworks tonight. Hopefully it will have cooled off by then.

I'm having a good day. I just got back from spending the day at one of the state parks with Cheyanne, my sister, and her kids. It was cloudy and sprinkling when we got there but warm and humid and it cleared off into a pretty nice day.

Headed to my parents in a bit to have my birthday dinner and birthday cake that Cheyanne made for me. Then home for some sparklers and bed since I have to work in the morning and Cheyanne has math school in the morning :)

Brook, sorry about the rain and your sore throat. I hope your kids aren't too disappointed. I can understand not wanting to drag everything to the beach though. A movie seems like a great escape about now!

Hailey, glad you are having a good 4th :) Did you see the pin on Pinterest about using a red solo cup (or any kind of plastic cup I'm sure) to cover the child's hand while they are doing sparklers? We tried that a few nights ago and it worked really well. My son got burned with them once and now they worry me. I'm an overprotective mom when it comes to fireworks. I won't let my kids hold roman candles and I won't hold them myself.

Lorie, sorry about your dad. :( My grandma's birthday is the 10th and my DH's grandma's birthday is the 11th and they have both passed and we like to do something special to remember them for their birthday. Anniversaries and such are difficult. Even when I think I'm okay, they sneak up on me and it hurts. Father's day was the 11th anniversary of my son's birth/death (stillborn) and I was trying so hard to be chipper but boy, it didn't work. I hope you get your AC back on soon! I can't imagine the heat without the AC.

Marie, happy birthday! :) I'm glad you had a nice time this morning. :)

My kids are outside decorating their bikes with crepe paper. I snuck away for a minute. I'm worn out already and not in the mood for celebrating (my iron is really low and I'm both physically and mentally fatigued) but I am trying!

I'm glad your day is going well, even if it is 'just a 4th' ;) It is pretty quiet on facebook today and around here, super quiet!
 
I'm having a decent day. I got the day off and went to the farm with Colby to help him check sprinklers, etc. Then we went out to eat- nothing says Independence Day like a little Mexican food right? lol. He's out messing in the barn right now and I'm soaking up the AC. I think we are going to grill out for dinner.

I've got work tomorrow and Friday, so most of our celebrating will be this weekend at the lake. My parents boat has been down for repairs for over a year and we are finally getting to take it out. We are all so excited. The lake's big firework show is on Saturday, so that will be even more exciting. I'm so ready for the weekend.

Thanks Ru. He was an awesome dad and even better grandfather. Even though he had MD and was a paraplegic, he taught my son how to ride a bike. Still amazes me and makes me smile. His determination was and still is my inspiration. :)

We've had kind of a rough day here today, too. We woke up to a broken refrigerator/freezer and had to relocate everything to the spare ones (not big enough at all for that) and are online shopping for a new one. Then we went to the 4th parade we usually do but it was soooo hot (100 Fahrenheit with a 102 heat index right now) that we had to leave right after and even though he gulped two 17oz bottles of water in less than an hour, my three year old was too lethargic for me to venture out again for fear he'd get heat stroke. We gave him popsicles and revived him in the AC once we were home and stayed in the AC but then his brother and him were fighting over the bathroom and he had his hand accidentally smashed in the door and it swelled up and was bruised for about a half hour. He's using it fine though and now acts like it isn't hurt unless you push on it so we're monitoring him to see if an Xay is needed for a possible fracture (which I doubt the way he's acting and because the swelling went down and it doesn't look like it's injured anymore at all). We're about to eat dinner and then go swimming so hopefully things start looking up. There's a fire ban here because of the lack of rain so no fireworks unless our town does them still (a lot have been cancelled due to the drought). Still trying to make the best of it all! :) Happy Fourth everyone!

Andrea, you have my sympathy! I hope things get better with the swimming and kudos to you for making the best of a bad day. :)
 
Well it's the 5th here already, and it's my Dad's birthday, so we're about to head down to my folks place and celebrate with the family.
 
OMGee, my mother has flooded the bathroom taking a shower to cool off. I don't know how she manages to do these things, but she is hard on a house. Five beach towels and a half hour of mopping later, it is finally cleaned up. I am back in the basement trying to cool off in more ways than one now. Decided while I was on my hands and knees drying the corner behind the toilet, I am not cooking. Special K for supper tonight! :)

We went to my grandparents for the small-town parade. We were about five minutes late and missed half of it. LOL

It was extremely hot & boring waiting for fireworks, so we came home. Since Luke is at the ILs, we arent' even going back out for fireworks. It's TOO hot! :)
 
Not really. The big fireworks and local picnic celebrations where we live were yesterday and hubby had to work, so we didn't really do much of anything. He got home in time for us to make it out to a nearby park JUST in time to see the fireworks go off. He got home pretty late if you figure when the sun goes down at this time in the summer. We don't really have much family nearby so not much to do. I guess I understand that the 4th is on a Wednesday and so everyone wanted to celebrate on the 3rd so they could sleep in today or something, but a lot of folks had to work on the 3rd, you know what I mean? Moving all the activities to the 3rd means a lot of us kind of miss out.

Hooray for the SSD sale. I will probably grab a couple things off my wishlist and spend some time scrapping.

Yeah, can you believe it. I am just smiling through it. My son is going, "seriously, you're not cooking supper?" so I will probably have to come up with something. I'm thinking, seriously, you are almost 21, cook it yourself. lol

The heat is relentless and I hear it is supposed to last until Monday. I have to do my annual testing at the hospital tomorrow, so I will be cool for a few hours. That repair man better come tomorrow or I am going to be in real big trouble. AND so will he. :p
 
I've had more exciting holidays. It's super hot and humid here so we opted to skip the traditional 4th of July parade in my hometown. We went to visit Timothy in the hospital and are now finally getting his room set up (he comes home in two weeks) so it's been more of a normal day than a holiday here.
 
We have had a great 4th! Took the kids to their first fireworks last night, and to their first parade today. It was crazy hot and wore us all out, but DS was too excited to sleep, so we turned on The Music Man. We've had amazing food all day, including grilled pizza for dinner. I love cooking on holidays. :) I'm kind of glad we had our fireworks last night because the parade/fair took a lot out of DD, and I wouldn't feel right waking her up to go each them tonight.

Megan- sounds like they had a long day yesterday and i am sure they had a blast.

I just got back after i bought 500 pop its ( Hayden loves throwing them) and then 60 sparklers.
 
Andrea, sorry about your day. :( I'm glad you are trying to make the best of it though!

Kristin, we live in a small town and while we don't have a 4th of July parade our St. Patrick's Day parade lasts about 10 minutes so I totally get it.

Sounds like fun, Megan. I wish I shared your love of cooking on the holidays. I just hate it all year. LOL

Hailey, my kids love those pop-its too (or snappers as I see them called here a lot). They found some this year called sliders. They look like little sticks and you set them on the ground and then slide your foot across them. They start popping like crazy. They are pretty neat.

We just set off the few that I bought for the kids today (aside from sparklers which we'll do later this evening) and now we are getting ready to go to the park and listen to the community band play patriotic music. That is totally one of my favorite things to do. I love patriotic music. :) I snapped some pictures of the kids but can't find our flags and I usually take flag pictures so I'm kind of bummed.

We had steak on the grill (tried flat iron steak as recommended on Rachel Ray and it was awesome) as well as baked potatoes and corn on the cob. Then the kids had ice cream and the traditional bomb pops (cause you have to have red, white and blue rockets on the 4th, especially in ice form! ;) )

origami - I know what you mean about how it messes with people when they move celebrations around. I don't like the 4th falling during the week, especially not the middle of the week. Here in town they always do the fireworks ON the 4th no matter what day it falls on. One year they had to postpone because of rain and flooding though but that was different. We did see a fireworks display last night but it was put on by two retirement homes.

Kara, sorry things aren't more special for you today but how exciting that your little guy will be coming home soon! :)
 
we did burgers and dogs on the grill, I have tons of fruit and snacks for the kids to munch on the rest of the night and made them some red, white and blue jello treats for later :)
 
Glad some of you are having a wonderful 4th, and I'm sorry to those of you who aren't! We had a nice day. Not especially festive, but a fun family day. This morning we just stayed in and played, and DH and DS watched a baseball game. This afternoon we had a water balloon and water gun fight, watched The Incredibles, and ordered pizza for dinner. DH and I saw fireworks a couple of weeks ago, which is good since the kids aren't ready for such a late, loud show yet.
 
It has been raining here - the first time I EVER remember it raining on the 4th! So it's been quiet. We are getting ready to eat ribs, then we'll do some fireworks later. My older boys are going to hang out with friends. Maybe the rest of us will watch a movie tonight.
 
We just got back. We had a great time meeting up with friends at the park to listen to the community band. The kids all played and then we walked over to watch the fireworks (we had parked already so we just walked over and grabbed our chairs). It was awesome. :)
 
My day ended up being great. Colby and I have probably spent more time together awake in July then we did all of June. It's been great hanging out with him all day and I really don't want to go to work tomorrow.
