Windows 8

I am about an hour away from owning a new laptop with Windows 8 on it - any tips or tricks I should know about. I am familiar with Windows and am using Windows 7 right now.

All I can recommend is to thoroughly read/watch the 'getting started with Windows 8' menu when you start up your computer. That helped me a LOT when I was getting used to my mother in laws computer. At home I"m still on Windows 7.
 
Thanks Jacinda - I got such a good deal including some very good price matching/beating so saved just under $500 including antivirus and extended warranty which I think is a pretty good deal
 
keep poking at it. even when you get frustrated with it. I still hate it (it's on connor''s laptop not mine), but overtime i've learned how to deal with it. I still accidentally pull up that menu screen page, but at least I know how to get back easier now :P
 
Sounds like a great deal! I agree with Jacinda about watching the videos that Microsoft will point you to. I've never needed to do that before, but the differences between Windows 7 and 8 aren't as intuitive as they've been in past upgrades. The other thing to know is that you can set your computer to start on the desktop rather than the start screen if you want to. It took me a few weeks to get used to 8 when I first switched, but I've been using it almost a year now and it's fine. Enjoy your new computer!

There are some things the 'tiles' are good for in Windows 8 and then others that are better on the desktop. I use the tiles a lot for reading digital library books from the library, basic calculators, weather, news reports, etc...

I use the desktop for Microsoft Office, Outlook, and PSE. It's easy to switch between the two.

Since you are a student, I would really check out OneNote (if you aren't already using it). It's a wonderful way to store notes, ideas, outlines, clippings from websites, etc...

I have Onenote already so that is good. Most of the playing around will have to wait til I have high speed internet again on the 26th
 
Sorry, no tips from me - I am having a computer built for me that has Windows 7 because I LOATHE Windows 8. With my work the whole tile set up makes it a nightmare to access the things I need quickly. However, my 14-yo daughter has 8 on her laptop and loves it and learned how to use it quite quickly.

Windows 10 is coming out fairly soon but I can only imaging what a nightmare that will be!

I have 8 but I have it set to go directly to my desktop and skip the tiles. I forget it's 8 sometimes.

Thats one thing I will look into tomorrow cause the tiles are confusing me more than anything atm
 
I never use the tiles. Some of my older and most used software, like PS, doesn't even have a tile available. I can see where it's useful for tablets or hybrids, but I'm glad it can be bypassed.
 
If it hasnt already upgrade to 8.1 straight away (free)
I also dont use the tile/app screen I always stay on the desktop screen then its pretty much like all the other windows systems.
I love win8 and I came from a big jump from XP.
 
I am happy with Windows 8.1 and the tiles are no biggie I just press the start key to jump over to desktop mode. I've pinned my most used programs to the task bar and voilà it's all straightforward from there. :)

yep this is what a friend suggested I do and so far I am transitioning well - helps I am fairly computer literate too
 
I despise windows 8..... Myself and my oldest son will be riding out windows 7 for as long as our laptops will last... I'm hoping that brings us to the official release of Windows 10, which I've checked out and much prefer over 8. *knock on wood* that I didn't just jinx myself. LOL
 
Jennifer, how is it going? Do you like Windows 8? I heard it's pretty good and I actually like the interface, but I've never used it.
 
I work in IT at a college, I help students with macs, iPads, smartphones and all manners of windows systems.
My best advice? Buy stock in the company that sells Zantac, keep your hand away from your hair and invest in a punching bag!
They are skipping version 9 and going to 10 but it won't be for a while yet. There is a plug in (sorry, don't have the link) google it, that will give you a system 7 like start menu again. Find it, every one is so glad they installed it.
Sorry but as an IT professional, it's the best I can do!
