What am I doing wrong with my TIF files?

I know a lot of people say they work in TIF instead of PSD because it saves space. I'd like to do it because you can see the little preview instead of the ugly blue icon. BUT when I try to use TIF, rather than being a smaller file, it ends up being such a large file that Elements crashes and the computer never wants to open the layout again. Why am I getting a 10x larger file instead of a smaller one?!

Make sure you have these boxes checked:

LZW
Interleaved (if this is an option on yours)
IMB or MAC (whichever you use)
and
ZIP
