Text app for kids with just wi-fi

I'm setting up my old phone for my son and I want to give him some type of texting app (so he can text with family). Anyone have any suggestions? It's just going to have wi-fi connection not real service.

my kids use textfree and it has worked very well for them.

My kids used text free too. The only downside is that they deactivate you if you don't use it for a while so my son has had to get new numbers from time to time.

How about google chat? We use GroupMe and some people use WhatsApp.. but I believe they both need phone numbers?

Google Hangouts is what we use. The bonus is it can tie in with your SMS texts and they can all appear in a single app.
