display driver?? and what does it mean if your monitor keeps freezing and/or going black? then afterwards a window pops up saying "the display driver failed, but has recovered" ?? I'm pretty much computer illiterate... I just turn this bad boy on and expect it to work, I don't know or care how.

sooo... is this a monitor issue? PC issue? something that can be easily fixed??

It sounds like your drivers for your video card need to be updated.

In Windows, you just click the start button, go to All Programs, and then choose Windows Updates. It'll check and see what updates you have available. These should be updated automatically, but sometimes in mine, the display drivers are considered "optional" instead of "important," so those don't get done automatically.

A display driver is what makes your computer display images on your monitor. Libby is right, you need to see if your drivers need to be updated. If the update doesn't work and you still get the error, it probably means your video card is going kaput.

well... phbbbt. thanks girls!! I just checked all the driver stuffs & it says that all the drivers are good to go... so I wonder if it's the video card itself, like Liz said. which totally stinks. bleh.

I told the hubs that I thought we might need a new video card and he said we should just get a new computer ?? whatthewha?!! of course I should be thrilled with an offer like that... but I really don't want to move to windows 8 [and don't even offer up Mac... out of the question]. so now I'm depressed.

We inherited a new laptop a few months ago - DH is just now getting it set up for me. But it's scary since it has windows 8! Sooooooo different!! So yeah I can understand your hesitancy of not wanting to get a new computer!

With Windows updates, it will automatically update to windows 11. Mine did with the latest update.

Dell offers windows 7 machines. Go to dell.com and in the search bar type in windows 7 and your options should pop up. I'm not sure, but other companies might offer that also.

Ugh I would hate having to switch to Windows 8 ...definitely understand your frustration there.

If all your drivers are up to date, I would check to see what you had running when you got display driver crashed. Mine used to do that but I knew what my issue was. I'd have about 20 Chrome tabs open, Photoshop, Lightroom, and watching Netflix. I ended up getting more RAM which helped and the only thing I can't play are my PC games without some issues (the Sims, World of Warcraft, League of Legends).

I was really scared to move to windows 8 also, but I did it in december. It only took me 1 day to get used to it, after I did the update to 8.1.
