Scrapping Budget OMG!

Just added up how much I've spent on here in the past few months and OMG I nearly had heart failure!!! I knew I was buying LOADS and spending more than I should but even so it frightened me

How does everyone budget for their scraping? How do you justify it? How do you stop yourself from buying everything?

I play along with the Bingo Challenges here at SSD every month.
When I finish all the challenges, it gives me a coupon for 40% off.

I only shop here, but I try not to shop every week. But I put things in my wishlist for when my coupon comes.
The coupon saves me a lot of money.

The trick is to never actually tally up what the overall spend is. Ignorance is bliss. :p

I try not to spend more than 40 a month. I do hit up the major sales and wishlist a lot of stuff for when we have a sale. But I just totalled mine since Novermber 2008 and it was really high. Much higher than I expected it to be. But if you figure I dont really have any other hobbies I spend on, I dont have any bad habits either. Dont buy lots of makeup or nail polish. Dont get manis or pedis. So my digi-scrapping is the only place Ill really splurge. So for my total since November which did surprise me that Id spent that much was 5000.

If you need to make your dollar stretch more, we do have big sales in May and November for International Scrapbook Day. There's usually a handful of other sale days that have significant discounts too.

You can also frequent the designer's blogs/facebook pages as they may have competitions for a free kit/voucher to their store.

Lastly, make sure to check out the Bargain Bites section of the store - kits are frequently rotated through there at 40% off.

Brilliant idea about the bingo challenge, I will start doing that :-) I looked into it quickly before and thought I would be making too many pages for the challenge alone that I wouldn't use personally but didn't see the 40% off bit :-) Considering what I spend, that will save a LOT! :-)

I am far too impatient to wait so long for the big sales hehe! The last one I bought a TON!
I spent a fair bit on other stores aswell before I discovered here and now shop 95% here.

I do the bingo challenge to get the coupon too. I have been adding things to my wish list so when I have the coupon that is the only area I look at not the whole store. lol Plus delaying my purchases makes me really thing about how I am going to use the kit and often now use them for multiple layout not just one.

I have found that I have been able to make most of the challenges work with photos that I need to scrap anyways and what doesn't work for photos of my kids I make about me (which I have completely neglected to any scrapping about ever...) So it is win win for me.

I got on a few CT's and then was overloaded with kits to scrap! I use to buy a lot but now I have so many unused kits that I need to work with, I only buy the ones that I MUST MUST MUST have!

This. Definitely this. I added mine up one day and learned very quickly to stop doing that.

Some good suggestions here. I go a little crazy on the big sales. I also check to see what's 40% off in Bargain Bites (although many times I already own the ones I see there. :D )

I used to be a paper scrapper. At least with digital I can use an embellishment or paper 5 times if I want to. Plus, it is really easy to order another copy of a book for grandma. I started out thinking I was saving money but I have had my crazy moments (especially on those Going, Going, Gone! sales). I just need to scrap more to justify these purchases.

I also complete the challenges to get the 40% off but sometimes I can't resist some of the new releases and the free with purchase (as with this week's I heart SSD kit).
When I browse the shoppe, I see so many kits I LOVE but try to resist my urge to buy on impulse. I try to think whether I could use a kit or not, whether it's versatile enough or not because I don't really like using a kit for just one page. I love kits that I can use over and over again. That being said, I hang and shop only here at SSD because I believe the best products are here!

too funny!! I add up every where else, but here! :crying:

I budget what I can afford through my commissions from my direct sales business. If I have the money, I know I can get it without it eating from my family's budget. If not, then I can't get it. Luckily for me, business has been really good and I can afford quite a few things these days!

The bingo challenges are SUCH a great way to save money. That coupon can go a long way!!! And then it's easy to justify buying all the gorgeous kits because you're using them to scrap bingo pages with ;)

I also pretty much only buy with the coupons I get from doing the Bingo challenges. I'll add things to my wishlist as I see them but only shop about once a month - sometimes that's weeks after I add things to my wishlist and by then that initial 'must have it because its so pretty, etc' urge has gone. Having said that, I'll still spend more than I probably should!!

I take advantage of the "free with purchase" deals since there is at least one every week here if you spend a certain amount. I also look out for coupons (and try to scrap challenges for the Bingo coupon). I add to my wishlist and wait for sales as well. I like that you can scrap here with old kits as well and I do a lot of mix and matching old with new kits. I still have to restrain myself from not buying everything I like the day it comes out sometimes though lol.

Yup, that's pretty much how I've been able to justify my spending this summer!! I'm like "oh I get two kits for the price of one!"

Ignorance IS a bliss...
I have a pre-paid Credit Card linked to my Pay Pal account, so "in theory" I can´t spent more than I choose to... BUT since SSD accept credit cards, that´s not always true... LOL
I do spend WAY too more than I shoud. And I have over 3,000 kits so I don´t NEED more
but, but, but... they are soooo pretty...

Some great ideas here. I always shop during the fall sale and give myself a bit each week to buy a new release if I really love it and know I'm going to use it. Being on CT teams of course helps to build your stash but there are always other designers and product that just call out to you and need to be bought. I try to shop only at a few stores and don't spread myself too thin. It's just too easy for it to get out of hand. I've been looking at the bingo challenge and am going to start participating in that too. There are just too many great designers here and I am just drooling over all the gorgeous kits. I need to shop more.

Because of exchange rates I 90% of the time only shop when there is a sale. Otherwise I will buy when I'm not at uni cause I don't have quite as many expenses. I also wish list a lot so I'm not making too many impulse decisions

once you get to a certain spot in your digital stash, you don't feel as compelled to spend a ton more... i've been digital scrapping for almost two years now and i feel as if my stash is rounded out... there are a few releases that i feel are must have and spend money on those... i have probably spent an astounding amount here on supplies... however, i use it to document my memories and those are priceless... so i'm fine by that. my honey buns has a credit card set up for stuff for my digital obsession and he is a million times better fiscally than i am so if i am spending more on digital supplies, he lets me know. hes never upset but does push for me to keep in mind where i may need more supplies for a certain event and where i dont need much in another area.

i am blessed to say i get to do creative team work for some of the most brilliant designers in the industry but i will also say that while that seems a relief for scrap purchases, i always feel like because my designers are sharing their designs with me and letting me be a part of their business, that my layouts with such should be top notch. it creates an extra layer of challenge as far as my scrap ability goes and i feel competitive with myself to do better and better which is great motivation. if you are interested in following that path, it is more than free stuff.

either way and although it may seem expensive if you tally up purchases... you are documenting the things you'll wish you could remember when you start getting older, kids start getting older, spouse gets older. to me that is priceless... and honestly, no matter what kind of huge stash youve got, there will always be something you covet. the messiest and most neon products for me will always be bought.

the trick to buying less is discovering your scrap style and looking at where you really shine or where you need to work on. i can make short work of messy/art journally/glittery but forget it as far as cartoony stuff goes. <3

however, not sure how long you have been practicing this hobby, but as other hobbies, you will spend the most in the beginning of your interest. <3

luckily, we have a great challenge system that will earn you discounts every month depending on what pattern you choose... discounts could be up to 40%.

anyhow! dont look at the total of what you bought!! lmao. set a budget monthly for digital supplies, utilize your wishlist to determine the things you absolutely have to have, then purchase them with your discount.

its tough believe me... i wanna buy every darn thing nearly every week! just gotta filter some out and youll be okay.

also, i chose a designer or two that i pretty much loved and loved all new products, and exercised customer loyalty when purchasing supplies usually every other week etc.

I think we've all been there! I try to balance my budget with the amount of scrapping I do, so when I'm doing a lot of scrapping and actually USING what I buy, I don't feel bad spending a lot.

Most of this year I haven't been scrapping much, so I limit my budget to $15, and if I don't use what I buy, I don't let myself buy anything new the next month. This is incentive to use what I buy!

It helps me to have more self control if I keep track of what I'm spending and using, so I actually write it in my little notebook where I keep track of what I'm scrapping.

But remember, the more you scrap the more you can buy! : )

We've all been there, and it's true what others have said about spending more when you're newer to digiscrapping. Now I have a big enough stash that there are really only a couple of kits a month that I can't resist. (Doesn't mean that's all I buy, but most other things I can wishlist and wait for a sale.)

I set a monthly scrap budget for myself. I have a magnetic notepad hanging at my desk, and at the start of the month I write my monthly budget. Each time I buy I write the new amount I have left to spend. If I'm under budget for the month I carry that over to the next month or save it for a sale. For scrapping that's enough to keep me in line. But for books, I need to go further than that, LOL. Every month I buy myself an Amazon gift card, and that's all the money I can spend on Kindle books for the month.

Good luck and have fun!

I try to keep mine around $30 a month using my Bingo coupon! I also make sure that I scrap with what a buy the next month, so I'm actually using what I'm spending my money on. That helps me feel like it was money well spent. :) I think also that managing my wishlist and keeping it tight really helps!
