Porch Decorations

Do you decorate your porch for the holidays/seasons? I love a decorated porch and am always trying to make mine look nice, but the wind is not my friend. I live next to an open pasture, which means there isn't anything to break the wind, so when it hits my house, it is fierce. The wind literally howls almost all winter long.

This year, I put up an outside Christmas tree and of course it couldn't stay up on it's own. Knowing this, I strategically placed a planter filled with dirt, the one I put my fairy garden in each year, behind it and tied it down to it, thinking it would keep it upright. Nope, the wind blew it and the planter right over. WTH? :cursing:

I am trying to figure out what else I can try to keep that tree upright because I want my porch to look nice for all the people delivering my Christmas packages. LOL

If you decorate your porch, post a picture because I am always looking for new ideas and inspiration. And if you know how to keep a outside Christmas tree upright in a monsoon, please share your secret as I am desperate now.

If I figure it out how to get my porch looking like something other than a disaster site, I will post a pic too.

If you could extend the three tree stand legs to be twice as wide as the base of the tree then it would be very hard to topple. Or secure the top of tree to the soffit or roof of your porch if you have an overhang. A flat Christmas tree for the wall is another option. Not 3D but still festive.

We don't decorate out side partly for that same reason, in our newer subdivision there's not much wind blockage or blowing snow drift blockage and our yard seems to be one of those "special" spots that holds it. So our snow drifts are DEEP!!!

Sorry I'm no help. I do agree a wider base, perhaps staking it into the ground, like they do young saplings?

This is our second year with the porch, we had our siding redone last year and the porch added on and I love it. The wind can be challenging, some days are better than others. LOL! I wish I had some tips.

Ugh, hopefully these pics aren't still giant, I resized them, but they're not connecting on my end.

Cute Vanessa! The most the delivery guys get from me is a holiday doormat and themed yard flags. In the summer I put potted plants out but for some reason I've never done much with our porch. It might be since we face a busy state road and don't ever use it as a 'hang out' that I've never devoted much to it?
Good luck with your tree though! It sounds pretty. Staking it down is the best idea I can come up with.

Our porch is set back so it's a bit protected from wind & weather. However, I have had pumpkins fly down the street & a pillow that was lost (and later returned by a neighbor) from our bench during a wind storm. For Christmas, I have a little weighted tree that I put on my porch chair & a couple of baskets of glittered pinecones. They are all pinecones from our back yard that we baked then glittered when the kids were younger. I like to use the little battery operated lights for the tree & my wreath on the door.

From last year- showing our bench & the little table I decorate too- it has another little weighted tree & a little Christmas sign. I love my bulldog wearing a snow hat pillow on the bench that I pull out in the winter. We didn't put up the grinch this year, not really sure why...

I live in North Dakota. My outside decorations all winter are a windswept mound of snow—nothing else I could do.

Thanks for the advice and inspiration. I am at work so I can't see the photos to compliment on, but once my internet at home is back up, you can bet I will be looking.

I did back everything flat up against the house, which seems to have helped some. I also anchored it to my glider as well as the planter, which I placed in the vee between the bottom of the glider and the house.

I don't think I am meant to have a beautiful holiday porch though. I purchased some lanterns too, and the fake candles I brought for them don't work. I got 8 different ones and not one of them works. I figure I must be doing something wrong, but have no idea what it would be. It's battery operated. Put in batteries, glow. Should be pretty simple, but it is being anything but. :(

I love to decorate but outside can be sparse. We have a wreath and small tree as well as a Merry Christmas mat. I have a snowman at the entry way and a Merry Christmas flag....Inside is another story. LOL

I have a small square porch that has 2 open sides, south and east. My front yard is wide open with no trees so snow will collect on the porch in the corner. So I don't even try putting anything on it.

I had it fixed up this summer (took indoor/outdoor carpet Dad put down in 1972 off), the cement sanded and sealed. I did put 2 chairs and a small table out this summer. I put a couple of wooden decorations made by an uncle many years ago but the slightest wind kept knocking them down, so they came off the porch.
