NSBR: baking a ham for Easter??

So... I'm having Easter dinner at my house and I've never prepared a ham before. I have church Easter morning so I can't be hanging out at home basting a ham all morning. I'm looking for a recipe where I can pretty much pop the ham in the oven (I have a dutch oven if needed) and let it cook. No muss, no fuss is my motto this year. I'd love to do a glaze or something to that effect so that the ham is nice and moist and a bit flavorful.
So... hit me with your best recipes/hints/tips/words-of-encouragement cuz I'm kinda starting to freak out at the idea of preparing a huge traditional easter dinner for my whole family!!

Sorry no help here, I don't have any resipes. I don't even cook that well - I leave it up to DH. He's made turkey for T-giving though and used a recipe off from Emeril's site from Food Network.

I'm sure you'll do fine...it's a lot of pressure being the main course, just watch your time and poke your ham so you don't overcook. Good luck!

Don't a lot of hams come like pre-flavored or with a glze packet? I thought they did.

PS~I'll be in the same boat if Jordan's family decides to come down. Which we still don't know yet! ACK!

Normally I do Christmas and Thanksgiving and my mother-in-law does Easter... but this year I'm doing Easter and it will be my first ham. I just picked one up at Costco and it is the spiral sliced type and came with a packet for glaze. I hope it will be yummy!

woot girl my FAVE ham recipe is dump and go one haha...ok that sounds gross but still

it's a Coke ham (I have used regular coke iand cherry coke f you like cherry flavor)

Just pat your ham with some brown sugar
pour a can or two of coke over it
and bake for the amt of time it says to on the ham lol
you can freeze some of the juice for later if you want and reuse on pork chops or anything you want :)

I'll get the real recipe for ya later!!

I made a really great pineapple glaze last year and I didn't have to baste it often, I'll see if I can find the recipe for ya!

here you go Jenny:

1/2 smoked ham
1 medium can crushed pineapple
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1/4 tsp. cloves, powdered form
2 tbsp. corn starch
1/2 c. brown sugar

Bake 1/2 ham for 1 hour, in a 350 degree oven before applying glaze. Add remaining contents to 1 can crushed pineapple. Heat on stove, stir constantly, until glaze is thick. Before spreading glaze, cut thick skin off ham, leave small quantity of fat from ham in pan. Spread glaze evenly over ham, bake for 30 minutes.

put it in a pot, cover it, turn it on a low heat and bake it for several hours. I usually put mine in around 9am and we usually eat around 3pm. I only check it to make sure there is enough water in the pan. the lid will keep it moist.

im so gonna have to cook a ham now!!! this sounds so yummie!

I've done the costco ham (not the Martha one) several times. It's pretty much no-fail for me . . . and I'm a lousy cook. comes with a powdered glaze packet that I mix with 3 tbls OJ instead of water.

hmm, now that I think about it . . . I wonder if my hams turn out okay b/c I think my oven is about 25 degrees cooler than it should be . . .

Do you have a slower cooker big enough for your ham? I always do ours in that, with about 1 cup of water and my seasoning and it ALWAYS turns out very, very moist! I usually turn it on in the morning on low and by 2 or 3 its just perfect!

Good luck with your ham, I am sure it will turn out gREAT!

The easiest thing to do is get a precooked ham, like the spiral sliced kind. They are fine to eat cold out of the package, or you can heat them up according to the package & put the glaze on for the last 30 minutes of the cooking time. They only need an hour or so in the oven rather than the several hours needed for an uncooked ham.

The easiest glaze I have ever come across was simply apricot jam, watered down with OJ (or soda) to make a thick syrup. Heat it up in the microwave until it's warm & then baste 20-30 minutes before the ham is done.

We're going to friend's for dinner & they are having a lamb roast, which I haven't had in years & am really looking forward to.

I actually know how to cook ham.. LOL it's one of the few meats I'm good at.. Anyway.. I haven't read the replies.. but the BEST glaze I've made was just super simple guava or mango juice w/ lots of brown sugar.. you can wrap it in aluminum foil so it all stays put.. and presto insta-yummy-ham.

I get a big bone in ham, boil it for an hour in water, in a big pot. Then I put it in the oven for an hour with this glaze on it. It's YUMMO:

Glaze:
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup honey
4 tbsp mustard (mostly for colour)
2 cups pineapple juice (orange juice will do in a pinch, but it's not as good)

That's all I do, and it's delish! I never baste it either.

OH I was just going to ask you for this!!! Thanks for sharing J!

No prob Jac, it's really yummy! Cook at around 360 for an hour or so. It's so good. Yummmm, I can't wait until Sunday LOL

Oh, and I usually make scalloped potatoes with mine.

jen, i say you buy a pack of deli ham, nuke it in the micro, slap it on a plate and call it good.

that's my plan. ;)

Ok, so Jamie.... with the ham that you boil for an hour and then cook for an hour....
is this a partially cooked ham? cuz thats what I have and I certainly don't want to over-cook it. :) thanks!!

hey jenster...ALL hams sold as grocery stores are fully cooked. they have to be by law...as so eloquently stated by bill my butcher man.
