Need help from the crafty ones

I am going on a zoo field trip with the 4th graders in May. There are approx. 100 students. I want water bottle lanyards for all of them. Thing is, I can't find a good source for bulk orders. The Oriental Trading ones get lousy reviews.

I started looking up ways to make them myself and I think I can make it work using oings and lanyard cord or ribbon. I can get a pack of 100 oings for less than $5 so that's awesome. I found all sorts of bulk lanyard cord on eBay but they are meant for phones, ID badges, etc. They have metal clasps at the end. Can anyone help me figure out a way to make these work?

I am looking at these cords as they look durable enough to hold a water bottle:

I am just not sure how I could modify them to attach the oing. I think the oing could actually just hook through the metal clip and then the bottle would hang like that. What do you think?

There are lanyard cords with the plastic break away parts but I don't think they would survive the weight of the full bottles...

These would work well if I wasn't afraid of the plastic end popping off. A water bottle being slung around on a kid's neck could be too much force, I think.

Any suggestions or ideas? I REALLY want to keep this as economical as possible. If I use the lanyards shown in the first post, I could do it all for a little over $25. That would be ideal for me really as I will also be buying the bottled water for them to use with it.
 
I dont know how to explain it exactly what I am thinking just basicaly just slip the end of the landyard through the clip/oing to make a loop and put that loop on the water bottle under the lip?
 
I know what you are saying! That would eliminate the oing entirely and probably make it easier for the kids to use. I just have to make sure the bottles of water I get have a long enough neck. I have some here at home that have this stumpy little neck area and I don't think that would work with them.
 
I just love it when dad-type men do tutorials. LOL. So cute.

I would totally make the lanyard thing on his tutorial, but instead of the dungaree buttons (or whatever) I'd just sew the loops closed... much cheaper. You'd want to double stitch it. Do you have a sewing machine, Sherri?
 
I watched that tutorial earlier. That's what got me to thinking about making then with ribbon but then I found the lanyards and wondered if I could make them work. I think I need to hit the craft store and the hardware store and see what I can come up with. I agree with you on sewing them, Brook. My sewing machine could use a workout. :)
 
Wide ribbon and a sewing machine would totally work, and be cheap! I bet you could find some really fun ribbons too that the kids would love.
