Layer Styles sort of quit working in PSE 10?

Curious if anyone has ever had this happen to them? I'm wracking my brain to think out why? Last week, they worked fine. This week, I cannot get them to appear. If I open up a template that already has shadows, then those are there. But if I try to apply shadows to anything myself, it says that they are there when I look at the layer style info, but there is nothing on the screen.

It's the weirdest thing. I've been googling, but haven't found anything, thought I'd ask here in case anyone has had this happen before.

OK, to clarify the weirdness- I can copy layer styles within a template, and past them to new elements and it works fine. But in a new file that is NOT a template, once again, the box says the style is there but it won't appear. So it appears to be a problem with "new documents" that I am creating. Could I have clicked something to cause this problem?

I wish I could help you but I'm not really savvy at PSE. Hopefully someone who uses it can chime in.
