My laptop isnt dying. Cant afford a new one til next year. Right now its randomly shutting down with no warning when im browsing the net or on fb (6x in 2 days). Am sick over the thought that its dying as I need it for uni at the bare minimum. Its about 3 years old Toshiba Satellite C660 running Windows 7

Oh no. Is it under warranty? Have you done a defragmentation on it lately? Emptied trash, freed up some hard drive? I'm not computer savvy, so I have no idea why it would be shutting down. If it does die, maybe you could hire a laptop temporarily? I'll cross my fingers for you. I know you need it for Uni.

Yikes!! I was also going to recommend what Jacinda said - cleaning out some space, defrag... and also add, if you can get a can of compressed air and clean around the fan area on the back (or under) the laptop. I've had this happen a few times and it turned out, for me, the computer gets hot (dust build up on the fan so it's not turning properly) and as a safety measure, turns off.

I hope that it keeps plugging away for you!

I am sorry to hear that... I have an older lap top, that I don't use. If it dies let me know if you cover shipping you can have it, I don't use it anymore! Good luck!

Definitely check out the fan. I've also had computers that would randomly shut down if they got too hot. I even had to get a little stand for one so that it didn't sit right on anything as it got too hot fairly often.

The fan is ok as far as I know as it was running cold last night & the battery wasnt too hot either, it was just the rest of the base. Hoping to find the paper work to see if its still under warrenty. Im only using it when I absolutely need it at the moment.

So sorry to hear this! I hope it's ok. My desktop does that when it gets too hot or is out of memory. I had to clean a lot of stuff off. I had to move my digiscrap files off to an EHD. Also, if I have too many windows open (like now), it moves a lot slower. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Well for now I'm doing uni work using either uni computers or computers at the library to get the two assignments due next week done, then I have 2 weeks off to sort my laptop out while I'm off uni.

Well things are looking up atm - used my laptop with a Heatshift Cooling Pad for about 4 hours tonight with no random shutdowns....long may this continue.

Glad to hear it's working now!

My Macbook randomly shut down too, and it was because of the heat. I got a small fan and use it constantly now, and it's fine now.

Guess it must have been a fluke because my laptop hasnt shutdown/overheated since April 7, YAY!!!!:):)

That happened to me once and it turned out that an update didn't go right. DH went back to a previous update and updated again and all was well.

I'm glad the random shutdowns seem to have stopped! Similar to what Kim said, I've had tech people tell me to update the bios file when things like that start going wrong. Sometimes that's enough and sometimes it isn't, but it's a good starting place. Another possibility is that you have a failing hard drive. Are you all backed up just in case?
