How do you keep track of your e-books?

I'm starting to lose track of what I've purchased, especially the cookbooks :(. I download a bunch of free Kindle books and the ones I purchase are getting lost in the middle of all the others. I'm probably just going to make a list of the cookbooks I've purchased and put it in the front of my recipe binder, but I was wondering if there was another way that would work better? Thanks!

What kindle do you have? Or are you just using the kindle app on another device?

On my actual kindle, I have everything sorted into categories. on my iPad, I have lists in my Notes app that tells me what books I have by each author and such.

You can make collections on the Kindle, adn sort your books that way. I have Collections called - Faves, Chick Lit, Classics etc I also have some by author too Makes it a whole lot easier!

I have collections, too. Not everything is sorted, but I do have a lot of them categorized. I even have a category called "to read soon" which are books that I'm most anxious to read. If I've got a bunch by one author, I make a category for those. I've also got categories for series. I need to do better though!

I also use collections - actually I just have a non-fiction collection at the moment, and all my fiction is on the main pages. I should probably organize better than this, but its working for me for now.
Also, after I finish reading, I remove the book from my device. I know I can always get it back (from my amazon account, etc) if I want to read it again, but I rarely reead books.

oh can anyone help teach a girl how to make groups/lists/catorgories on the ipad??? PLEASE! I'm desperate for some organization of mine.

Yep anther one that uses categories!!! My collections are:

Reading (meaning the book(s) I am currently reading)
To Read
Romance
Harry Potter
Young Adult
Mystery
Non Fiction

Cookbooks
Literary Fiction

I use collections on my Kindle. I do find it a bit more challenging on other devices that don't support collections, like my iPhone.

I don't actually have a Kindle, just the iPad app. I don't think that I can do collections that way (based on all the complaints I've read in the Kindle forums).

Well phoeeey. They really need something for the app to help us fix this!

I agree! I think it's part of their evil plan to get folks to buy the actual Kindle ;)

Yep! I have noticed they are slow to update the iPhone and iPad apps!

You can archive what you're not reading though, your device can differentiate between what is in the cloud and what is on the iPad.

No, you can't. That's why I just use the Notes app that comes pre-installed on the iPad/iPone and make my own lists of what titles I have that I need to track(series, new books I haven't read, cookbooks, techy/self help/home stuff). When I need to know a cookbook title to be able to search quickly, I can run over and look in the notes app.

On my Kindle I keep collections, but I also use Goodreads. On Goodreads I've made a shelf called "Kindle, own it" or something like that. Then I can sort so I see all unread books that I own for Kindle, or all fantasy books I own, etc. Generally when I'm browsing my books I use Goodreads because it's easier to see a description of the book, see if it's part of a series or a standalone, etc.

I do things similar to you rachel... though i am sooo not organized like i should be. i think the goodreads app and the kindle app make a good combo - for me at least.

Maybe I should check out Goodreads. I'm not concerned about buying the same book twice; Amazon does the same thing as B&N and won't let you buy something twice, but I'm losing track of the books I've actually purchased and want to read. I probably should archive most of the books so that I'm not looking at so many at once.

Oh yea after I finish a book I archive it and usually only buy one book at a time. The most Ive ever had at one time is probably five or six. I got to B&N and browse, write down the books I want and then keep the list to buy one at a time and read. I dont buy many cookbooks. All mine are real books not e-books.
