? Graduation Gifts ?

My dd is graduating from High School this June and she has requested a DSLR my dh wants to run out and buy it for her but IDK i'm still iffffy about it.

Mind you she will be going to school for that in NY so she will use it. I wanted to give her money to put towards it and let her come up with the rest so she'll be more responsible with it.

We already dished out the money for her entry and dorming fees...

So tell me WWYD as far as a graduation gift?

Graduation is a HUGE deal so I'd probably get her the DSLR but I'd make sure she knew if anything happened to it it was going to be her responsibility to replace it.

Mine has asked for a car :0/ (a VW bug to be exact..)

I got nothing for graduation from anyone per se except for a set of sheets from a lady at my church, but then again, the family vacation to Holland happened to coincide with my graduation year.

I got my son a laptop computer since he didn't have a computer of his own. It's something he uses every day and absolutely needed for college. I imagine a good camera would be the same if that is what she will be studying.

I think graduation is a big deal and if this is something she will use as her studies, I think it would be a good idea.

Yes, I agree with Julie and say, if she doesn't have a laptop, that's pretty much a necessity for college now. If she does, then the DSLR would be amazing for her.

Meg my dd has had no motivation to even go for her license she's 17 about to be 18 in Aug.... so Thank gosh for no 'car' talk... LOL

Julie, she does have a laptop and yeah she will need the camera so I guess we'll have to go with that and just let her know that if anything happens she's on her own....

As for travels we are planning a trip to El Salvador in Aug and she is suppose to be coming as a grad gift. She's been wanting to go and she's always in school when we go so I'd hate to have her just say ok I won't go to El Salv with you guys b/c I need my camera. I know her dad is not going to do both.....

and the fun adult choices begin.....

The biggest graduation gift I got was a gold pendant with a grad cap on it and the year. LOL Things have changed a lot since then though. (umm... my 20th reunion is this fall *cough*)

I dunno, I might go overboard but I'd definitely get my daughter the DSLR for graduation if she were in that position. I got my 9 year old an iPod Touch for her HALF birthday and she's getting a Kindle for her birthday. (we're gadget people ;) ) The kids already have their own computer (desktop though, not laptop, I'm not ready for that as I have more control with a desktop). I imagine by the time DD gets in high school she'll have a laptop. She's starting to become really interested in photography so I also figure she'll end up with a DSLR before she graduates. However, we don't spend a lot on clothes or extra curricular activities or anything like that and I am very frugal and always get the best deal possible so its not like I just go out and spend frivolously on the kids.
