We're thinking of an ereader for Christmas for a 12 year old book nut. I have no idea about them, so what am I looking for and what to avoid? There are just so many to choose from and I want to get one to last a long time. Thanks!

Well, I"m a Kindle addict through and through. If you are JUST looking for an ereader, I'd go with a Kindle Paperwhite.

This one is more along the lines of the model I have (I have a case with a built-in light, so I haven't upgraded yet).

Either way though, I love Kindles and have had awesome customer service through Amazon. I wouldn't even consider another brand.

Well I have no idea about them at all. When you say JUST an ereader... what else can they do?

I have a Kindle paperwhite and I LOVE it. Like, the battery lasts a ridiculously long time, it's so easy to buy books right on it (or buy on the computer and they download right to it) and you don't need a light on to read on it. Plus, like Libby said, their customer service is unmatched and the selection of books on Amazon is excellent.

I think Libby is probably referring to something like the Kindle Fire - which is an ereader/tablet - so you can download apps, play games, watch videos, etc, on it.

I've got all kinds of mad crazy love for my Kindle. I've had mine for nearly 6 years and have never had any sort of problem with it, ever! i know that mine is an absolute dinosaur [see: extinct] but just haven't felt the need to get one of the newer versions.

my boys [8 & 5] both have Kindle Fires and read on them all the time. I also add that my 5 year old has been horrifically hard on his and the customer service at Amazon has been truly outstanding!!

Well, like the Kindle Fire allows you to read books like an ereader, but it's also a tablet that does apps, games, videos, etc.

The biggest difference between reading on the regular Kindle (like the Paperwhite) and the Kindle Fire is that the Kindle Fire is backlit, and that can be hard on your eyes. It would be hard to read the Kindle Fire outside in the bright sunlight. My kindle reads just like a paper book. It's not lit up at all.

I have both a Kindle Fire and a Kindle Touch, and I never read on my Fire.

Ok that is a lot of help! Ugh but Amazon is a PITA lol. I've not had much success buying stuff from them being in Australia. I'll check out for sure. He uses my ipad for games so the paper white might be the go. Especially for outside.

Def go based on a good reader for australia.

IE in canada a kindle fire is nothing like a kindle fire in the states because we don't have access to the videos etc.

I went with a kobo reader because it allows me to borrow books from libraries in canada. You can do that with a kindle in the states but you can't download kindle books from the library in canada (unless that has recently changed)

Oh that's a good point, KCB!

Also, if you do decide to go with a Kindle, I know you can buy them in some stores here so you can avoid ordering fom Amazon. Not sure what your options over there would be though.

Is the Kobo good KCB? They sell those here in most stores. So I assume the books are also easy accessible here too.

I do like my kobo. My main reason for going with it was because I wanted the option to borrow books from my library. I do notice that in terms of purchasing books sometimes the kobo is more expensive than if I were to purchase through amazon for a kindle. Often times deals will come through for kindle that don't come through for kobo so I guess it all depends on what you think and what is available in australia. Do your libraries offer book downloading?

If I lived in the states I think i'd go with a kindle because they always seem to have killer deals with books but those deals don't transfer through here :(

I really have no idea. I need to ask other Aussies. I am sure I know some who use Amazon here but the deals and prices are so different.

I have a Kobo as well, I'm a satisfied customer. I'm from the Netherlands, Kobo and Sony are the biggest brands in ereaders over here.

I think I am sold on the Kobo touch. Good price and is compatible with the online library we'd use too. Kindle is double the price & not compatible. Which is a pity!

I had a Kobo Touch, and now I have the Kobo Glo. Both are good. I like the Glo for the back light -- it makes reading in bed so easy. :)

Yeah the Glo has the light which is very tempting. I want it to last him for years, not need to be upgraded soon lol, so it's worth the extra $ for it.

I have a Kindle and I love it. Have no idea about any other kind of eeader though. One thing I would look into, is what eeader is compatible with your library. I was all excited to borrow e-books through our library system, but they're only compatible with Androids and Kindle Fire versions. And mine isn't a Kindle Fire. If I get one for the kids I would make sure it's one they can use with their local library.

personally I prefer the ones that are for books ONLY!
I got one for my son that was an ereader, but also a tablet style, and I just found him using it to play games more than reading... (I thought for travel purposes both would be nice and not to mention it was the same price as just a reader).... had I known it was just going to be used as another gaming device I would have saved the expense and left him with his laptop for internet, and got him a library card instead ;)

Aside from that, look for one that says it is compatible with epub files.... those are the ones that should work on any ereader device.

I ended up with the Kobo touch. Just an ereader so he's not tempted to play games. And not too expensive either if it's not a hit. I hope he'll love it.

Im hoping that he can take it to school seeing as its just for books. They have a no electronic policy but fingers crossed eraders are exempt.
