Back up your files!

I cannot stress how important it is to back up your files.

I thought it would never happen to me. You know, stuff like that happens to someone else, not me.. But it did happen. My hard drive in my dell pc died. Now that I think back, there were symptoms, like pc having "hard time" waking up from hibernate state. Or browser hanging up. Or hard time closing programs. So yesterday, when I was experiencing another "hang up", I just shut down the PC. When I restarted it, I got the blue screen with a message "DRIVER_POWER_STATUS_FAILURE". After several unsuccessful attempts to restart in the safe mode, I gave in and called technical support. They instructed me to run diagnostic program which resulted in an error code. Yep, error code said hard drive failure. Dell will be sending out tech to replace the HDD.

Thankfully, I have all files backed up with Carbonite. My husband also said he should be able to recover files once the HDD is removed from my PC.

Yes it will be painful to reinstall all the programs but at least I my files are safe.

So glad your files will be safe Monika! And it is a good reminder for all of use. I have Carbonite now and am in the process of switching to Crashplan. I would love to know how Carbonite does at restoring your files. I only switched b/c Carbonite cannot back up an EHD for a Mac. Good luck with the restoration!

This is why I have all my files on an external harddrive. If my mac breaks down, my pictures and scrapbook supplies will be safe.

I'm glad you had everything backed up so that this is only an inconvenience. It has been a few weeks since I ran my EHD backup (though Crashplan is always up to date), so I'm plugging it in right now.

oh so glad your files are safe! I have crashplan for my EHD. I would DIE if it died and I lost everything!

Glad you didn't lose anything.

Also, always back up your EHDs too! I would have lost my entire stash if I hadn't had my EHD backed up to crashplan.

Sorry Monika, but glad you have it backed up.
What I really love about Apple is Time Machine. It constantly backs up and it's super simple to retrieve files if it does crash.

Ditto. LOVE my Time Machine backup! We also have Backblaze, so we're always covered in the even of a hard drive failure. I had a hard drive death a few years ago, and while it was a pain, I was sooooo glad that I didn't lose any data!

What is the Apple Time Machine? Our PC died in December. We switched to Mac and now I am so lost.

Another person here to say yes please back up. My last backup was in October. PC died in December. I'm not sure how good my EHD was backing up because I'm not finding stuff that I thought would be on there.

So glad you didn't lose anything! My EHD died a few years ago -- but I didn't panic because I had everything backed up to BackBlaze. I breathed a little easier once I had the replacement files restored. I would be disappointed to lose my digi scrap supplies but I'd be devastated to lose my family photos.

I always think about when my computer will fail, not if. Back-ups are sooooo important!

Thanks for the reminder to check my backup system. I have automatic backup of everything by Backblaze and it runs so quietly I like to check it occasionally to make sure it's working. I also manually upload all my photos and scrapbook pages to Smugmug as part of my workflow.
