hanging drapes...

So question for you all... hanging drapes...

Do you hang them at the top of the window or closer to the ceiling? All the "Experts" say hanging them from the ceiling makes your ceilings feel taller... some of my windows are about a foot from the ceiling, so it would look okay to do that... but my bedroom, there are like 2 1/2 ft from the window to the ceiling... if don't have a valance, will that look odd? I always grew up with you hang drapes at the top of the window ledge...

I don't have curtains. Is that weird? I have no idea how to hang them.

i have always heard to go HIGH ... if there is a really large gap b/tw ceiling and window, maybe you could had a shade (or faux shade) that goes from ceiling to top-ish part of window - to make it look like your windows are higher all the way across.

this says don't go more than 8 inches above or it will look awkward ... so i think if you go 8+ you need to do the shade trick or something ... or just go 6 inches above ...

haha - i read a lot of interior design blogs/articles LOL ... when we buy our house i will definitely be hanging my drapes high!

I hang them where my FIL put the rod and leave it at that

Haha! This is how I did it the first time around... But my curtains were either pooling or too high off the floor.

We did it differently the second time around... We hung the rod where the curtains (already hemmed) would hit the floor. Most of my rods ended up being about 7 inches from the top of the windows. (And for the record, I only have two rooms in my house that have curtains. I have them in the bedrooms, but not in the living areas.)

We hung the rods so that the curtains would just touch the floor in the upstairs bedroom, living room, and master. In my office, DH's office, and the hall, they are hung so they cover our entire window, even if it looks like crap. We have 16 foot ceilings in my office and a 9 foot high window, 12 foot ceilings in DH's office and an 8 ft window, and the hall has a real awkward space.
