goodness.. ear infections?!
lily had a HORRIBLE ear infection last week - she missed the entire week of school (cept for 1/2 a day) didn't eat barely anything and was in so much pain. We took her to the dr and was given drops and then the ER and she was finally given medicine to help - her ear drained (gross i know) and the pain was gone.. fast forward to last night and boom it seems to be back again. She has been up screaming all night..
Is it normal for ear infections to come back so quickly?? gahhh |

with both of my boys, once the antibiotic ran out, it never took long for the ear infection to come right back.

Poor L It's quite possible it never actually went away..She probably just needs another dose of antibiotics.

It didn't come back, it was never gone. She might need another course of ABX, one that lasts 14 days instead of the ten. And whichever one she was on wasn't enough, so ask for a different one.
In the ER did they give her a shot of rocephin? If so, ask for omniceff this time.

I feel your pain Kristin! My youngest had the worst ear infections recurrently when she was little. She didn't outgrow them until she was about 6. She still gets 1 or 2 every year though, without fail. She probably just needs a stronger, longer course antibiotic. I know with my DD, her infections could go from mild to BAD really quick. I went through many a night of that "up crying and screaming all night". You feel so helpless. It is such a relief though when their ears finally drain, as gross as it is.

Kaylee used to get ear infections every time she got a cold but even with the double infections, just giving her Motrin was good enough for pain relief until the antibiotics took it away. Once though, she needed to have 3 rounds to get rid of one.
I hope Lily's goes away soon!!

One of my kids had a year of recurrent ear infections. I learned that if the pain isn't gone by 3 days, the antibiotic probably isn't working and you should call the doctor. If it appears to go away but comes back as soon as the course of meds is over, then like everyone else said it wasn't fully gone. My other DS, who isn't prone to ear infections at all, got his first at age 3. It was a doozy--an antibiotic resistant double ear infection that persisted through 3 courses of antibiotics until they finally gave him an antibiotic shot that was much stronger.

I know after reoccurring sinus infections with me, I know now to be on a LONG course of antibiotics or it's coming right back. The Z-Packs (5-dose rounds) used to work, but don't anymore. I start feeling better after a couple days, but I need those extra days of antibiotics to really kick it to the curb. I hope she gets to feeling better!

Jason has only had one ear infection and the other little boys have never had any. I used to get them ALL the time as a kid so I know her pain!!

Poor sweetie! My mom said I never had ear infections as a child, but I get them from time to time as an adult. I don't care to tell you... they HURT!!! I hope they get her some more meds and that she's feeling better soon!

My boys' ear infections NEVER went away until they got tubes. Tubes were a life saver for us!

I would go back, get different/longer abx and I would also put her on an allergy medicine as well like allegra. For Kyle it helped "keep" him draining and he hasn't had tubes or recurring ear infections since.

Poor sweetheart...we completely understand here. It's likely the ear didn't fully drain and bacteria started to grow again. Unfortunately very common in little ones because of how their ears are shaped inside. My littlest is scheduled for tubes next week. We've had only a few months (in the dead heat of summer) when they were clear. Ceftin seemed to work the best, but we've also done Omnicef (many times), Augmentin (couldn't tolerate), and Biaxin (current). I hope she feels much better soon!

I've used that one a lot..it's also called Bactrim or Septra in the States I think..just an old school sulfa drug. I've used it every time I've had a kidney or bladder infection. Ears aren't something we deal with a lot here since tubes but I imagine it would work well for that too. Hope she feels better soon.
