I picked the I don't care, I just eat 'em! option but if I was getting technical, I'd say that doughnuts is the "proper" way to spell it and donuts is the "slang" way to spell it. But that's just my opinion.

I'm curious to see how this plays out, lol!

Personally, I'm just a fan of em in general...which is why I rarely buy em, lol, but tomorrow is the first day of school and it's our new tradition!

I just looked them both up on dictionary.com and they both are correct but like previously said donut is more slang and doughnut is the proper name, lol

What Heather said. Donut is an alternate spelling of doughnut. But, I voted for #3. Just eat 'em.

Yeah-I've lived in places where there's practically a Dunkin Donuts on every other block, so I'm used to donut, too. I don't think either is wrong, but that's how I'd write it.

As a linguist I voted for the doughnuts. As a person I'd vote for the third one.

Anyways, if in some areas of the English-speaking world "donuts" is the most used variant, it's correct. It's just that doughnut is no way incorrect. ;-)

Eat them, and forget about it.

I was born & raised in Texas. I have lived here for 29 years. And I spell it doughnut. Webster.com says donut is a variation of doughnut, but doughnut is the one that gets the full definition. You're both right.

I went to Toronto last August (has it been a year already?) and was a firm, tried and true Dunkin Donuts gal. Well there are no DD around but there was a Tim Hortons within walking distance of my hotel.

HOLY COW! That place rocked. Seriously. The coffee was awesome and the timbits were divine.

ummm... I don't know. I'm not an English speaker but I would say donut b/c doughnut has this 'gh' impossible sound to say for non English speakers. I could point and say "I want one of that yummy shaped in ring thing over there". Glad I can't talk when I'm eating.
