I really think area rugs are a great compromise. You can get a nice area rug for warmth and comfort. You can get them relatively cheap these days, they can be cleaned and then after a few years when they get grubby, I just get a new one. Ruggables are a nice idea and I do have one that I like but they are definitely not as comfy as a nice thick area rug.
