i was going to suggest this group too. The designers post a lot of one kit calls that would be a good way to get "in" with the designer. Once you've been given an opportunity, hopefully you can hook up for more permanent work. Also guest CT calls are another good avenue.
We've all been where you are. It is very hard not to take it personally. Traci's articles (linked in Crystal's response) and Libby's points about photo quality and lo pixelation are really good advice too.
