journaling: The Waldo canyon fire burned so hot that it melted the minerals in the soil into a hard crust. As part of the canyon rehab crew we joined for a day, we were given rakes to break it up so that seeds could find their way to the good soil below and start the regrowth needed to help keep the area from flash floods and mud slides. It was hard, messy work perched on the side of the steep mountain gullies. We were covered in soot and dirt when we finished, but had a sense of accomplishment that we had done something good to help the earth and our community recover.
