On our first day in Wellington, since it was a rainy, windy and generally awful day we decided to go to Te Papa. Once inside we checked our bags and jackets at the coat check – what a lifesaver that service was. At that point Grandma & I decided to split up so that we got the most photographs we could during our day. My approach to tackling the five floors of displays was to tackle each floor one at a time then meet Grandma on the ground floor each hour where we would get our bags and have a drink or some food – we brought our own food and drink in as a can of Coke at the Café there was $3.50. There were so many wonderful displays to look at on each floor it became a mission to see everything I wanted to see. My favourite exhibition was Golden Days – 100 years of history of New Zealand on film. With this exhibition you walked into a junk shop where you sat down and watched a video on the 100 years of history of New Zealand but while the video was playing certain elements in the junk shop would move or make a noise at the appropriate time. At about 3pm we decided we had seen the best Te Papa had to offer & started to make plans to head back to our Backpackers. I thoroughly enjoyed spending the day at Te Papa and next time would probably come back for a second day as it was so interesting. Definitely my highlight of the entire trip to Wellington.
I think it's been over 10 years since I was in Wellington for more than a stopover. You make TePapa sound so interesting. I know my Brooke would love to go there - she's already hounding me to go to the Auckland museum. And $3.50 for a coke?? I think I'll be taking my own food/drink too.
