JOURNALING:
Tchaikovsky
(On card:) May 7,
we went to the Ohio Theatre for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra's performance of music by three Russian composers. The program opened with the orchestra playing Mussorgsky's "Sunrise on Moscow River." Then 26 year old Zhu Wang wowed the crowd with Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 2", followed by a well-deserved standing ovation. Then, the piece de resistance. The orchestra, under the baton of musical director Rossen Milanov, played Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5", one of the most famous works of the genre. There is a "Fate Theme" that gives the piece a sense of movement from dark to light. Another well-deserved standing ovation ended the entertaining afternoon.
