The bridge on Hwy 26 north of Cedarville has been in desparate need of repair for years. In late march the bridge was shut down
so a new one could be built. The road we live on is one eighth of a mile from the bridge, and while we knew the bridge
needed to be replaced, we also realized there would be a pretty big impact on us. There are barricades near the bridge as well
as north of our road ... we live on a cul-de-sac, so there is no where to go from our road. Unfortunately, detour signs, barricades
and a no outlet sign have not deterred cars, trucks, motorcycles and semis from coming down our road. We have had more traffic
on our road over the ast 5 months than we have over the 35+ years we've lived here! Because we can't travel south on Hwy 26,
it now takes us twice as long to get to Freeport and adds on 12 miles round trip. On the flip side, the countryside we drive through to get
to town is beautiful! And now, rather than hauling our bikes to the bike path, we can ride up and down the highway early
in the morning and evenings when there isn't much traffic. One round on our road and onto Hwy 26 up to the barricades and back
is one mile. So it pretty easy to bike 10 miles without much effort. And on a funny note - Shortly after the barricades
were put up, I picked up Harper, Greyson and Emerie came for a visit. I explained that we would have to drive through the
barricades to get to our house. As we neared our home, I looked in the rearview mirror and noticed Harper watching out of window
with a puzzeled look on her face. As we pulled into our garage, she told me she was happy to be at our house, and then she
said "But Grandma, I never did see the BEAR CAVES." I laughed and then explained it was barricades and not bear caves. Then
we all laughed and now everytime the kiddos see the barricades they scream "BEAR CAVES" and laugh. Definitely advantages and
disadvantages ... but I will be glad when this chapter is over ... hopefully by the end of September!
