I remember my Grandfather working hard in his gardens or painting houses - all after his official retirement. I learned recently that he worked even harder before he retired, working 12+ hour days at two jobs to pay for his daughters to go to college. He worked as a machinist for his primary job and then drilled wells with his brother, Percy, until dark. Somehow he found time to plant and tend two vegetable gardens, and make improvements to the house. He also had beautiful flowers surrounding the house and kept the local birds fed. He never made much money, but always had enough to travel back home to Canada, buy a car for my Mom and some of his grandchildren, and spoil all of his grandchildren. Plus, there was money in his estate to leave several thousand dollars to each of his his children and grandchildren. All that with an 8th grade education.
